Bulls in NM

My buddy works up at Los Alamos and drives by the Baca everyday and said there are a few bulls starting to grow. He said they saw bulls still packing hard antler during the middle of the turkey hunt too.

They're coming along quite nicely in 34. I've seen three that already have their fifths coming on. Fronts are looking real good so far...

You're a Mean man Cookie,
for teasing us like that.

Glad to hear they're coming on.

Hope the moisture keeps it where they can.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-07 AT 10:46PM (MST)[p]Hey Ive,
I saw HIM again this afternoon! I have got to get a better camera. 150 yards (maybe, if not less) laying down looking at me as if to say "What are you doing in my bedroom?" his firsts and seconds go to his nose before turning up about 6-8 inches. Thirds are only 12 or so right now but they will be the same as last year... 30+. No joke. I'll figure out how to get his pic and really be the sadistic @#$ that I know I can be!
The moisture is there. We got soaked today. The grass is almost knee high already and EVERYTHING is GREEN!

We plan on going up to Hopewell Lake ( unit 52 ) this weekend to do a little fishing and hiking around. Hope to see some bulls with their headgear. I put in for 52 for muzzleloader.

How's the drought going? Last year NM had a spring drought and it had a definate stunting affect on the back half of some of the antlers we saw.

Lookn good on this map...

Junior,

Thanks...you're on top of it.

I don't know if I can totally trust this map though. It shows the Gila as having normal precip. And right across the state line in AZ it shows as a severe drought. I bet the Gila might be a little under on the precip this year.

I think your recent map is a better indicator.

I agree...let's hope for the best (and shoot the biggest).

We are doing alot better this year with rain then last year. There were fire restrictions last year over most of the state at this time. If we can get the monsoons to kick in next month I think there is going to be some real nice bulls taken all over the state. We just got to hope to draw a tag.

You guys are really getting my heart pumping. I will be hunting Unit 34 this archery season. I have been hearing that the moisture has been great so far. Best in 7 years. This will be my first archery hunt and my first bull nunt so I am so pumped.

Cali, how is it you already know you're goin? You must have a landowner's tag already tied up. I'm out there finding good ones on the hope that I can draw but the NMDGF doesn't seem to like me very much.

I plan to buy a tag if I don't draw...Still debating on the unit, what one of the 16's gives the best chance at a decent bull...280 and up?

Cooke2,
Yes I am buying a tag this year. Since it is my first bull hunt I am going guided to get the know how and all future hunts will be DIY unless I don't have very much time to pre-scout. I am hoping for a 280+ bull but we will see what happens. Good luck drawing.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-01-07 AT 05:28AM (MST)[p]That explains why I can get a guided hunt in C plus the tag for about the same money as a D tag. :'(

Here you go Dave. I know it sucks but it was desperation!
