Good Colorado area for Muzzleloader cow?

I'm committed. Drew a resident statewide muzzleloader tag for cow elk in Colorado this year. Hoping to bag some meat and learn a new area and new weapon.

I realize this time of year the elk are at timberline. I have often hunted the Sangre's, but am looking for a new area to learn and enjoy. I do plan to get away from people, but this is for a cow elk so I don't want to hike in 6 miles for a cow if you know what I mean.

I've thought about 78, 80, 81 or possibly the south side of 551 into 681. I hear 80 and 81 get hit by a lot of out-of-staters during bow tho.

But then again what about the western edge of 85 or around the Spanish Peaks?

So many choices. I'd like to pick one and then concentrate on it... maps, scouting, etc, etc. But I'd really appreciate your guys' help to narrow it down. Or suggest something else.

Again, just looking for cow (meat) and an enjoyable time during the pre-rut into the rut. If the unit is not too tough, I'd like to take my 6-yr old son along too.

Thanks in advance!
