I put in for unit 30 Mule deer for the 3rd rifle season and I wanted to know what I was getting myself into. I have the required perference points so I should draw. What's it like? Casual observance is that it will depend on the snow to move them down. Is there areas that are better than others during that time of the year. Will I need chains and a jackman? I believe it is a large area and the 3rd season doesn't have allot of hunting pressure. Any info will be appreciated. Is there big bucks here? The rut should be just about starting. Mickeyelk

Basically its a desert type unit although there are some aspens and pines in some of the areas. A lot of scrub, sage, grass and pinions, rather arid looking country. Most hunting is done around the Book Cliffs. Yes snow will help with your hunt and yes the roads can get slick, chains could save you some headaches. There are good deer there like most western units but don't come easy. Best of luck on your hunt.
