I finally drew a bull tag after about 21 years of trying. Can anyone help me out with some areas to hunt. I have been around the Success Loop and seen a few but it seems pretty accessable to everyone. Info on the east side of the Schell would be helpful too. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The east side of the Schell's used to be a good place but over the past 5 or 6 years since there has been so many permist issued the elk numbers have dropped and the bulls that hang on the east side are few and far between, and the ones you do see are generally at about the 9,500 foot elevation or higher. Make sure you have good optics and are in sheep shape to hunt them bulls, also it is a newly made wilderness area and a couple people that I know of have already been written up for riding ATV's in the wilderness. Good luck and congrats.

what tag did you get specifically? archery, early, late, muzz. It's all different up there.

BigFly,

I drew a muzzleloader tag for that hunt. I just downloaded the topos for 111, 112, 113, & 114 into USA Photomaps and onto my computer. That is a lot of country to hunt, without even looking at 221 and 222. Looking at the Nevada record book, it looks like a lot of the big bulls are coming out of Schell Creek Range. I don't know too much about any of the units except I have hunted the deer muzzy hunt in 115 a few times and the elk density in that unit is very low, so I will definitely not be hunting there.

Good luck on your hunt!

A friend of mine drew this tag last year and went into Black Mtn in 111 from the east side by mule. He said he missed a huge bull and saw plenty of elk. He said the terrain and the trail in is super steep, it was like looking off a cliff, glad he was on a mule and not a horse.

I have hunted the success loop for cow elk archery quite a bit. The bulls used to be in there pretty thick but over the last few yrs they have disappeared and so have the cows except a few. I have not checked out the other areas at all..yet.

Good luck

I drew the first rifle season. I guess I may need to spend a lot of time in Ely scouting. I saw on Eastmans' Hunting TV the other day that they were in Ely on a bull hunt in December and it was hard to distinguish where they may have been since that area looks so common with all the juniper. I believe I recognized where they may have been.

If anyone has any more info, I would be greatful. Thanks to everyone else who responded.

A buddy of mine had that tag two years ago, he hired a guide and we hunted it hard. I learned the country pretty good and we saw several nice bulls every day most up high. I drew the same tag last year and hunted all the same spots only this time solo. I got a nice symetrical 6x6 opening day that scored abit over 300. sure there are plenty of bigger bulls there but being solo and a perfect stalk i ended the hunt and spent the next day plus packing meat. I can give you all the same info i used.....send me a PM. good luck bp
