I have 13 points for Colorado elk. Really want to burn them so i can archery hunt every other year in a unit I know well. My buddy and dad(72 yrs old) have 14 points. We applied for #61, first rifle this year and I think I held them back from getting a tag.

My 3 options are; let them apply together and apply by myself, all for 1st season rifle in unit #61 or, apply by myself for #61 archery and have them apply for #61, 1st rifle again or PP it and just help them, learning the country for my future hunt.

First option is we might all hunt together if we all drew or they'd draw and I'd go with them to help my dad and learn the country for when i drew it the next year or two.

Second option is I'd be able to hunt the rutting bulls for 2+ weeks and have a blast but maybe nothing in the freezer plus I'd have a good starting place from my hunt to help them on theirs.

Third choice would allow for me to make my dad's hunt the best I could and learn the unit.

First rifle is only 5 days but we'd spend a week scouting prior to the season after burning 13-14 points.

Archery is 4 weeks and I could spend at least 3 hunting and come back for a short 2 weeks to help them.

I'm leaning to archery hunting it by myself. Although I've been on 10+ archery elk hunts, all of the bulls I've called in solo have made me with 2 exceptions. This option would allow me to help dad on what will probably be his last quality elk hunt.

Would like advice from those that have hunted either of these seasons in unit #61.

I have no experience in CO, not much anyway, I would make my dads hunt the best no matter what, Let them go togeather and go with them, then maby the next year it will be the same only you will have the tag, So I think it is #3. Good luck and GOD bless you. Bill

Based on the info that you have provided, this seems to be the obvious choice for me. I can really relate to it too as my group has been to Colorado a few times now Elk hunting and all of us have been successful except Dad. This year I feel like it is my duty to do all that I can to help him seal the deal!

Good luck and keep us posted on your decision!

Cali,

Be careful trying to get too many tags for one season. I would either archery first and then go with Pa, or have your Dad draw and go later? Too many tags in a quality unit can be difficult.

In Utah, it just worked out that the three in our party drew in 3 consecutive years for elk. It has worked for the best rather than 3 tags for one season. The more you know about the unit only helps also as you hunt and learn.

Go with your dad. He will love it. Put in for PP, then you could probably go 2 years in a row, or 2 out of 3. The anticipation is better that way! :) Don't all go same year.

ktc has some sound advice.
Some of the later rifle hunts in 61 can be good as well, and usually don't take as many points. The 1st season will have some late rut activity for the first day or so, but I heard bulls bugling during the 3rd season while looking for deer, too. If you like, pm me about your up coming deer hunt, I was there for that hunt in 2005.
