Colorado OTC Archery

Well, I didn't draw a hunt in NM for the first time in 13 years. Bummer! My buds and I are going to Colorado for an OTC Archery hunt and need some starting places to go. We are in shape and are willing to hike in for some good bulls. Personally, I will pass on anything under 300 but my buddy says "if it's brown it's down". Any help on an area woulod be appreciated (no honey holes). I was told to try units 74 and 75 and possibly 62.

*75,77,78,751,771 San Juan Basin hunt hard and don't ( need 3-6p to draw) expect to see much till you put 1 or 2 miles between you and the nearest road.

** Rio Grande National Forest, focus on units 78, 80, and 81. Be weary of weather (7,500 - 14,000 ft) moderate snow will push the elk down and probably strand you for a few days. Use 2 track roads to access back country and day hike to distant herds

There are certainly a lot of elk in those units, and some 300 bulls, but the 300+ ones are few and far between. If you are hunting it for the first time, you will have to be extremely lucky to SEE a 300 bull. I would consider switching to your buddy's philosophy. Good luck!

I can tell you unit 62 gets more pressure than any other archery elk unit in the state.

I hunted there.

I killed a bull in 62 two years ago, but wouldn't hunt it again. I hunted in the Rio Grande across the state line from Chama, NM and had two years of good hunts, including seeing some BIG muleys. I would go back there if I was to hunt CO again.

I appreciate all the input guys. I think I found an area where access is limited and I have a buddy with horses. I'm still not 100 percent until we look into it more though. I know there are good bulls in Colorado and I'm willing to work for one. Thanks again.
