With all the debates on here, I think this pic might bring people back to the reality of the passion we all share. Here's a classic photo of my dad teaching my brother and I how to field dress a whitetail doe my brother had shot.

Thats a great photo. I had the pleasure of teaching my dad to field dress his first buck a few years ago in Utah. My parents were divorced when I was young so I didnt spend a lot of time with him. I was taught to hunt by my uncle and grandfather. We finally decided that he would apply for a Utah hunt with my wife and I and we drew tags. It was one of the best hunts I've ever been on and I didnt even pull a trigger. My wife got her first buck at first light on the second day of the hunt with me sitting right next to her. Dropped at the shot. I took care of her deer and went up to pick up dad. About an hour later we glassed up some deer across a canyon and the sneak was on. Twenty minutes later dad made a perfect shot and we were standing over his buck. He looked at me with that "what do I do now" look. It was pretty dang cool.
I dont mean to snag your thread but the picture just made me think of that and I thought I would share it.

Cool pic steve! By the looks of how tall you were back then and how tall you are now, you must have been around the age of 20? LOL. Just kidding, im guessing you and your brother were around 11 or 12, i didnt start deer hunting until i was 13, my dad wouldnt allow me to until then even though i already had the drive to get out there!

Thats also a decent sized doe!

Steve;

Awesome Story!!! That's what it's all about. Being with family and friends building some incredible memories. My dad raised my brother and I in the hunting heritage. It is my goal to do the same with my kids. Here is a pic of my dad and my son with my dad's 2003 buck. I was so proud of dad that he was able to take this buck. It wasn't about antler size, it was about a way of life. Almost a year previous he had a heartattack while we were on a hunting trip. He came very close to not making it out. After his bi-pass surgery he has been very weak. He really has lost a lot of the strength that he used to have. He definately can't walk and climb and hunt like he used to. With some patience though, he ended up taking this buck while he sat in his lawn chair.

BC: I remember when your Dad was going through the health problems. What great pictures especially with your son/Dad. Get your photo albums updated with all your boys shots......these memories cant be bought, just paid for with hard work and Love of family and the outdoors. Great pictures...... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Those are great pics and its awesome to see kids out with their dads hunting. I think some guys are reluctant to do it cause the kid might mess up the hunt. Lame. Although, we all know there are times when we get a little serious about finding a critter!

In 2000 I had my 17 month old daughter, Claire, with me when I killed my first bull, it was sweet. Since then, she's been on tons of hunts, but no more kills yet. My goal this spring is to have her along when I take a bear, but I"ll be going out without her several times too, so it may not happen!

My dad started taking me bird and deer hunting when I was 5. I had my first license at 9 and shot a 410 for birds and a 30-30 for biggame. Killed a bear at 9, deer at 12, elk didn't come till way later :0(

Here's my first bull with Claire!

Thanks for sharing man. I know i wouldnt be the guy i am today with out my grandpa and dad spending so much time and hard work teaching me the hunting and fishing ways. All the great memories i ahve already all have to do with hunting or fishing. I wish my Grandpa was still around so i could take him or atleast be older so i could really hunt and fish with him. Being 21 almsot 22 i have to remember when i am with my dad that i dont know everything and not to pitch to much shi* ya know. anyways thats my sentimental post.

I was 7 when I watched my dad and my grandpa dress out a spike elk my dad had just shot. Freaked me out. Especially when grandpa, crusty 'ol WWII Vet, wacked off a chunk of liver and ate it. Didn't even bother to wipe off the blood dripping down his week old white beard. Man, I took off running. Great memories though.

BC....your lucky to have photos of those days, thanks for sharing.

like i say, start em young, teach em right. my uncle was gonna show me how to gut one of the first bucks i ever got. think i was about 12. and i didn't do a very good job of killin' the poor thing. he was gutshot a couple times. and it had been a half hour or so since i shot it and it was swoll up pretty good. anyway, he did the big macho deal about "watch me and learn". he jabbed his knife in it and a big spray of green along with this huge fart sound shot out and hit him in the face. then he barfed all over my deer and walked off cussin' and told me to gut my own damn deer. i had to get a stick and scrape the scrambled eggs off it. so the first deer i ever had to field dress by myself was the worst of the nearly 100 since then. he taught me a heck of a lesson tho. in fact several. taking care of downed game is a very neglected skill, in my opinion. to me it's just as important as anything else, maybe more. proper field dressing and skinning and cooling and cleaning and all that are often done wrong. glad to see your ol' man brung ya up right.

Some great stories guys.
I believe I was about 9 or 10 in the first pic. My brother would have been 12 or 13.
I forgot to mention that after I took the pics of my dad's 03 buck I skinned it for him because didn't have the strength to do it. I also cut and wrapped it for him. Kinda neat to give back some of what he gave to me.
