Guides and Lobbyists

a statement from an earlier thread:

it has nothing to do with guides or outfitters. And what in the world is this statement about:

" All the guides in each state have their own guiding lobbyist and carry great weight politically"

Thats hilarious!

Well, if you don't believe that guiding associations are actively involved in legislation....you are really putting your head in the sand. In ten minutes I went to three different guiding organizations websites, in three different states, and found what you said was "hilarious". Guides DO have something to do with it. Who do you think puts pressure on the state game organizations to keep tag numbers high? No tags = no money for guides.

Activities of the MOGA (Montana guiding association)

In 1999, MOGA lobbyied down a bill to decrease the number of nonresident hunting licenses by 10% a year for four years, an estimated loss of nearly 9,000 licenses.

The 1995 Legislature passed HB 195 which gave nonresident clients of outfitters a guaranteed license to hunt elk and deer. The number of licenses sold is controlled by the high price of those licenses and the requirement to hunt with the sponsoring outfitter. The money thus raised is paid to
landowners who provide free hunting access to both resident and nonresident hunters. These hunters have access to millions of acres of private land, without charge. Not a perfect program, but something for everyone, including the one thing outfitters needed for business stability: a guaranteed license
for their clients.

Stated Goals of Wyoming Outfitters and Guides

The Wyoming Outfitters & Guides Association has four primary objectives:

* lobby
* legislate
* educate
* promote

Idaho Guiding Association hiring a lobbyist

IOGA to interview lobbyist candidates. A group of IOGA members familiar with the IOGA (state) government affairs will interview several candidates for the IOGA lobbyist position on November 15. The group will evaluate the candidates and send a recommendation to the IOGA board of directors, which meets in December. IOGA's past lobbyist, John Watts, accepted a gubernatorial appointment to the Idaho Fish and Game Commission in late August, thereby creating an obvious conflict of interest. What suck's to me "IMHO"...is are the guide's paying any attention to the animal population, such as how much of a harvest can the herds handle i.e.; (elk - deer), it ain't about how much money one will lose if tags are cut back, get a second job dude!...

And all those who think I'm a dink, I guided buck hunters for 11 years, I no longer guide due to the fact that I watched our deer herd drop by 40% in ten years, I couldn't do it anymore and feel good about myself, we were taking 8 to 10 deer a year...

Hey' What a better life then working a couple months a year and making as much money as if you worked all year, no offence cause I know guiding is a hard JOB'...I did it for 11 years remember, but I also worked the spring and winter working highway maintenance...

If want to make a living while the deer herds aren't, then you are in it for the money and don't give a rats arse about the animal's you hunt, that's no different then the big corporation?s polluting just so they can make a profit at any cost.......what ever..?...

That's my two cents worth; hopefully I won't fall off my soapbox on the way down
