I lucked out and drew a Vernon deer muzzleloader tag. Although I live near by and will be able to scout quite alot this summer I was wondering if anyone had any information on the unit.
Thanks

I've hunted on the Vernon unit for many years, I even lived out in the hills riding fence lines for a summer, back when I was 16. Spent many days scouting the area. What particular information were you looking for?

Tooele,

Sound like your up the street from me. I am going to start scouting on the weekends here on out till the season. I was wondering on some information where to start scouting. Where the deer are in the summer and maybe some of there habits when the hunts start. Basically where to start looking? Canyons, mountains, roads, etc.
Thanks

Since the Vernon unit has become a draw area, I don't mind helping you out a little. I grew up in Tooele, however at the moment I live in Texas, so as far as scouting the unit in the last 2 yrs, I can't help you. My family hunted Vernon for 30 years and took some really nice bucks. My recommendation is that you hold out for a nice buck and don't take the first 21-24 inch deer that runs by like 95% of the hunters on this unit. I don't know what your experience is, but make sure you can field judge a rack before you show up on opening day. As far as scouting, there are normally a lot of nice bucks that hang out on the Front and back side of the Vernon unit during the summer. I like to divide the Vernon unit into 4 units (Tintic, front side, back side, and West Desert). I would start out by Driving past the Vernon reservoir several miles heading west over through Bennion. THis is a good place to start and with a good spotting scope, you'll be able to cover a lot of area without leaving your truck much. Continue along the front side of the Vernon mountains heading northwest looking up each canyon in the mornings and Evenings (Harker usually has some nice bucks). You'll have to return to the town of Vernon at some point and take a road that leads west to lookout pass in order to cover all of the area. Like I said this is really just a starting point and all the information I'm willing to give publicly. A lot of hunters end up hunting this front side as it is the easiest to access. You can start by scouting from the road, but if you really want the nicer bucks be prepared to hike a little ways. If you let me know how long it takes you to get out to Vernon, how much scouting you plan on doing, how long you plan on hunting, and how you will be hunting (road or real hunting)I can give you more specific info. If your interested you can give me an email.

Good Luck
