What Round!!!

My wife drew a rifle cow elk tag here in Idaho and we are trying to decide what round would be best for her to use. 7mm-08 or a 25-06? She shot her first deer a doe last year with the 25-06. So Iam looking for some advice from the folks on here. Thanks, Hugh

I own a .25-06 that I love, but I don't own a 7mm-08. That said, for elk I'd take the 7mm over the quarter bore. Elk are a lot bigger and tougher than deer and I'd go with the gun that can shoot a bigger bullet. If you use quality bullets like Nosler accubonds or partitions or some of the other premium bullets and get her a reasonable and close shot, she'll be fine.

Remember, it's her hunt, not yours. Make it as good for her as you can and it'll be better for you as well.

My wife used a 7mm-08 with 140 grain Nosler Partitions to anchor this little bull from 300 yards. I recommend it highly for youth/women elk hunters.

No matter which rifle the two of you decide on I would use the heaviest Partition or X-bullet style bullet you can get to shoot well, and be very selective about the shot she takes. The same philosophy should apply to all of us, even though I personally shoot a .338 when I rifle elk hunt.

I'm in the 7mm crowd too, especially for elk. My son's taken 3 with the .280 and 140 grain Partitions and x-bullets. Just about 150 fps more velocity than the 7/08. I tricked both my daughter and son their first year by loading a mild load with 120 gr Ballistic tips for them to get used to the rifle and then hot 140 graikn loads for hunting. They never noticed the recoil under hunting conditions.

I'm personally in the .338 crowd with Nick myself.

Let your wife decide what rifle she likes best, then select a premium bullet for it and go for it. I've yet to see a cow soak up much lead. I'd pick a 115-120gr bullet for the 25-06, and a 140-150gr for the 7-08. There isn't enough diffrence between the two to worry about.

Years ago I bought a remington SS model 7 with a synthetic stock in a 7mm-08. Never used it , not once, and got offered a nice deal on it and parted with it. Every time I read one of these posts I feel like kicking my own asss for selling that rifle....

NMHUNTNUTT - Thats the exact rifle I bought for my wife - its a sweet gun! If I ever get lucky enough to go on a sheep hunt thats what I'll be taking....about as light and compact as you can get. Don't mean to rub it in...

I bought a Kimber M84 7mm-08 Monday. It's for my daughters deer and elk hunts this year. Winchester/Nosler 140 gr. loads.
