OK, it was the elk tag, but I really wanted the Snipe hunt. My question is, what does the antler growth in AZ look like this year? Thanks in advance.

Are You Kidding Me! You lucky! From what I've seen its looks like a average year. Early and late rain fall for antler growth but we struggled the last few weeks. Do you have any idea where you are going to start?

I've hunted unit 9 and 10 and will start there. Have lots of time to find the "Right One". What a shocker to draw this tag!

I shoot a rifle, muzzle and bow, not sure what I'll concentrate on at this point. DIY for me, nothing against guides, just going to take my time and bring the family along to enjoy this special tag.

Both 9&10 have been dry this winter and spring. Most of the snow this past winter was from Flagstaff over to the White Mountains. 9 has gotten just a few showers that 10 has not.

You might consider units 3A/C over by Show Low

Congrats on the special draw.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-07 AT 06:17PM (MST)[p]3a/3c is a good unit. Arizona is super dry this year and the antlers are going to be affected. I have been in the unit numerous times already and it is dry. We need early rain for the grass so the antlers can grow without stunted top ends and that did not happen this year. You can still kill a very good bull.

Every unit in AZ has the same quality bulls as 9 and 10. Don't overlook others.

It's Bush's fault!!!

Man oh man!
Much congrats on winning that tag!

stick to eastern AZ they are geting the rain, 9 and 10 are great but very dry good luck, we need to see the pics from scouting trips and everything, have fun!!!!

WOW , CONGRATS ON THE TAG , AND ENJOY IT. Can't wait to hear how it all turns out...

Congrtulations! I am the guy that called you on the phone from when your name was drawn. The phone call to your family was the best all night! I think your wife was as excited as you were, at least after she figured out I wasn't a phone solicitor.

As for elk advice, AZ402 summed it up the best. It is realively simple this year; East-good, West-poor. Some good bulls will be killed in 8,9,10,etc...but on average there will be better antler developement on the east side of the state.

congrats clark, i was also one of the lucky winners!! i won the desert sheep tag! i dont know about you but i still havent slept since i got the news? congrats again. eric

Wow, congratulations on the tag! I'd be hunting hard in Sept. in units 9 or on the east side of the state as Chris stated. If it were me, I'd take my bow and have a rifle as a backup. Also, as a native in AZ I know that I can find 370-380 bulls in most every decent unit. Even at that, I'd still be thinking of hiring a guide for myself for this once in a lifetime opportunity and not leave it to chance. NO, I'm not a guide or soliciting, but that's how I'd probably do it (and I live on a budget too). As a non-resident, I'd definitely recommend it. Your chances at harvesting a true trophy better, and I'd be asking for scouting pics, that way you can see the size of the bulls some of these guys are watching year round!

Either way, it will be an experience to remember forever, and we want to see pics of your hunt!

Hi Chris,

My wife was on the phone with my Mother-in-Law before you called. I heard her getting excited about something but paid no attention. I was recovering from surgery I had two days earlier and was too tired to speak to anyone, let alone my MIL.
She ran over and handed me the phone, I gave her puzzled look not wanting to talk. It took me a moment to figure out who you were and if this was for real, actually until I received the email I was not totally sure.

I hope everyone gets the chance to experience the feeling of having such a great hunt opportunity once in their life. Thanks to everyone for your comments.

Eric

That is amazing that two MM guys won two of the most coveted tags!

We called Eric and left a message and then about 5 minutes later he must have hit his caller id because the hotel manager came in and said there was some guy on the line that says he won a sheep tag. The whole room got a kick out of that.

Eric, if you need any help on that sheep hunt let me know.

chris, i forgot the drawing was saturday! so when the number popped up i didnt recognize it, and about passed out when i got your message! anyways thanks for the call and the help. eric

Sweet congrats! I personally would go 9 or 1. The east units have gotten a lot more rain. Have fun and good luck. I would have to say you will prob need an outfitter though. Your best chances will be right before archery season opens up. Sep 1st through the 13th.

I agree with the 270 above, although a 365 day tag, your best shot will be September and the first part of October. Stay in touch with some of the local elk scouters in the area, I'm sure most of them wouldn't mind sharing some info with you. Good Luck on the hunt and we're all looking forward to your success.

Congrats on the tag...I sent you an email...I'll give up info ... for a picture of the bull you get. :)

I would suggest hunting early/middle Sept. if you wait too long most of AZ bulls get broken up.

The tag as I understand it is good for most units in Arizona from August 1, 2007 - July 31, 2008, including 23N.

Clark. It is good for ANY unit in AZ all year round!

Thanks for all the advice! Hopefully I'll have some exciting pictures and a great story by Sept.
