Idaho Unit 76 Elk Early Rifle tag

After years and years of applying, my dad finally drew the early season rifle tag for unit 66A and 76. My family has hunted this unit for years on the archery hunt and we know of many great places to get into very nice bulls, in the back country far away from any roads.

Unfortunately, my dad cannot hike far due to his health. My brothers and I feel very fortunate to have him around and want to find him the best bull we can possibly get him onto. Any suggestions on areas to scout that can be accessed within one quater mile of a wheeler trail or road would be greatly appreciated. I'm so excited for him and would love to see him get a bull over that 300 mark.

Thanks for any help in advance.

The best bulls are often away from the roads. My cuz had the permit last year. Shot a very dark horned 340 bull. We saw a 350-360 class bull scouting. However, he disappeared. A lot of archery hunters. Elk are very bugle shy in most areas. Don't know of an easy area close to a road. I would shoot the first 320 class bull in range, since he can't hike much. Good luck.
