Now that everybody has had a couple days to look through their regs, what is everyone's big draw? Elk, deer, moose, sheep, which one do you want the most?

Mine are late Pearrygin deer, modern firearm, and/or Naneum C archery tag for elk. Got 5pts and 3pts.

I drew a elk tag 3 years ago and shot a 7x8 and I have 7 deer points so Im hoping I draw that tag. I also have about 5 moose and sheep points. So Im hoping for any of those 3. I do want a nice muley on my wall though.

Ya forgot to mention, I put in for got sheep moose and am trying to fiqure out where I want to put my 4 archery points for elk towards. I am think possibly the Ellensburg area, there are some dandy bulls up there i think thats what Im going to do, I have been putting in for the toutle but with the strick fire restrictions these days its hard to get in there when you do draw a tag. Plus Id like to kill a real big bull and think Ellensburg is the place for that.

Drew a late buck tag in 2002 and a elk tag in 2003 so my luck might be up for awhile. I have one piont and might try for late archery entiat deer. Depending on when i go hunting in montana. try for a eastside bull elk permit. and the moose, sheep, and goat permits.

I've got 6 points and am dieing for deer, but with the quotas reduced arrggh. I drew elk last year so thats out, and believe it or not , I drew moose with 4 points so never again for that. One booner/pope and young will have to do. I have room on my wall for that sheep and goat though.
(is 7 the max)

I didn't realize there was a max for points on moose and sheep. I got 6 apiece. So after your max points, 7 or whatever it is, your odds never really increase after that huh?

kirkl....how do you have 7pts for deer? I thought 98' was the first year for applying for late deer. Maybe I'm wrong, and that's just the year I realized they had em' and started.

My buddy has already drawn my deer tag twice in the 5 years I've been applying. What a d...!

I think the max points is just how many years they have been doing the point thing if you started the first year and have not drawn yet. then you are maxed out on points.

I have had decent luck of late having two late mule deer tags and a branch antlered bull tag since 2000. No wonder I cant draw in Montana...Maybe the moose gods will smile on me like boneaddict! Anyway I will probably be struggling with the masses again.

LAST EDITED ON May-14-04 AT 05:41PM (MST)[p]I think I have 7 points, have to double check. maybe I have 6. I know its 6 or 7 though.

Fletch, where did you draw your buck tags, shoot anything with size.

Hey Fletch, I know a good moose guide for ya.

I drew the Selkirk unit, or Pend Orielle.

LAST EDITED ON May-14-04 AT 06:50PM (MST)[p]By the way guys, you don't really want to shoot one of those darn moose anyway. You have to eat on him for like two years, so you better hope he is one that tastes good. Then you have to reinforce your walls if you want to hang him in your house. Thats if you don't have to buy a new house for him to fit in. Plus, you have doctor bills for months following the hernia surgery after packing him out. Its just endless. : )

Just kidding. Its awesome. The story was in the Eas@@@@@ Bowhunting Journal a month ago if you have it. I'll try to dredge up a photo.

My Turn for a Late Mule deer tag. I can wait.

Garrett

Good luck to everyone

The point system started in 1996 so the most points you can have for any species is 8. I drew the Little Naches early bull tag in '96, so I am at 7 points on the elk.

I'm maxed with 8 points as of 2003 drawing on Deer, Moose, Goat, & Sheep. You get a point each year so counting the point I get for this year I'll have 9. Elk I have 6.

I'm thinking about the rifle Desert Unit for deer because I think there are some big ones there. The problem is they are located in a relatively small area and it sounds like a war zone from all the duck hunting. With the reduced tags for the late muley hunt in the Okanogan areas, it may be an aestheticially more enjoyable hunt w/ wide-open spaces & no company. Any thoughts on the trophy potential between the different units?

I'm waiting so see if I get drawn for any other states so I plan on waiting until almost the deadline before I apply. WA may also post the harvest data for 2003 by then.

Good luck in your draws.

boneaddict....I read your story and remember it well. Very neat. It's too bad your daughter wasn't actually there with you. I bet she thought that was pretty cool when you brought it home.

That's the same area I've put in for the last 6 years. Now I'll know who to call when I draw.:)

Yah Doug I will need a guide and your back too...hope your dad still has a mule by then.

Hey Fletch, You shouldn't even be allowed to put in after 3 tags in four years, ya dawg!!! Would you mind callin in my hunt choices for me, I must be doing somethin wrong as I still havent pulled a tag in this state. I Wonder what Mike and you will draw this year Sheep, Moose, or Goat, or is this year your one year waiting period. As for myself I have 7 or 8 pts around the board and I would take a freakin trophy Jackalope tag if I could just draw somethin.

One large chunk of steak!

Doug the picture wont come up for me! Steve, quit your whining every dog has his day...show me how to catch those steelhead and I might make the call for you! I will probably be sidelined for 10 yrs now!

If I ever figure out how to do this. Some days it works some days it won't. Kind of reminds me of something else...

Bone:

Thats one awesome slab of meat not to mention a nice rack! As far as points go, I have 8 for sheep, 6 for moose, none for goat since I tagged my last billy in 99. I have 2 for deer and 6 for elk. I'm losing sleep at night wanting to get my Quinault early bull tag. Sooner or later, I'll be walking the river beds of the Quinault looking for Mr. BIG!!!! I drew the Perrygin in 2001 and had a fantastic hunt. Too many bucks to count and the most beautiful country in the state. Of course I would love a sheep tag like every other yahoo. Good luck to all this year.

Falcon....did you have any weather over a Pearrygin for the late hunt in 01'? Been trying for that tag since day one. What did you end up takin?

Slayer:

We went the second week of the permit season, I think around the 9th of Nov. The weather was brisk with probally 18" of snow high in the mountains. The days were cool and overcast, and we hunted for 4 days. I shot a heavy 4x5 on day 3, and my partner shot a beautiful heavy 4x4 on day 4. We saw a ton of bucks, with about 6 or so shooters. I hope you get that tag someday. Everyone should have a decent permit hunt like that before they are dead and buried! lol

Got any photos of them. If you send them to me I'll post them for you. I'd like to throw some antler photos on here from some Twisp bucks, or Washington.

Bone:

I e-mailed you 2 pics from 2001. I'm no computer guru. I wanted to send the whole disk, but I couln't figure it out. Jack is the guy in the field, and I'm the guy with the buck on the tailgate.
The pictures never do justice to the hunt.

Slayer: I'm almost ashamed I haven't been back. I have heard about the crowds, and have stayed closer to home. I am going to go the last 5 days of the season this year since it lasts till
Oct 29th. I'm hoping for a freak snowstorm and some early rut activity. What are your thoughts on how crowded that place is during the regular season, and what are your chances of seeing a legal buck?

Hi Falcon, unfortunately I was unable to open what you sent me. I sent you an e-mail back. Thanks for trying. I think it has to do with a firewall, or security here where I work. I can receive single photos all of the time, but apparantly not the disk file you sent me. Hopefully you can try again, or someone else might be able to post them. I'm sure we all want to see them.

The last 3 years I have parked where everyone else "camps" and packpacked in. Should have started doing that years ago. Ya there are still a ton of deer down lower that time of year, but I cannot stand hunting in crowds. My cousin and I have taken 4 dandy bucks out of there since. It's a pain in the a$$ to get em' out but well worth it. I only see maybe 6 to 8 guys every year. It's nice to actually pass up legal bucks rather than feeling like you have to hurry up and shoot before someone else does.

Slayer:

Sounds like you got the system down! Getting away from the crowds
is a big part of seeing big deer. I hope you get your late tag because you will get your chance of a lifetime in our state. How many points did you say you had?

Bone:

Your a picture FREAK! I'll try something different and hopefully it will work. These are nice bucks, but I know that place puts out bigger racks.

Argggh. One more time, don't give up on me. Here's a little eye candy to keep you going. (I sent you your own private copy)

Doug:

I gave it another shot. If they don't come thru, give me your address and I'll send some in the mail.

Hey guys I have never hunted the Methow before. Been up there but never hunted and never been up there during the late hunts. i noticed that they hardly have any permits up there. Not like what they have done to the entiat and swakane stuff down where i am from. I kind of like the appeal. 50 tags for the entiat and 45 for the other side is a lot of people. I guess what i am saying i would trade some info from my neck of the woods if somebody could share a little from theirs up in those units you guys are talking.

Garrett

Falcon, I got 5pts right now. Ya hopefully I get drawn so I won't have to work so hard...haha!

Bone...I gotta either steal a scanner or digital camera and then I'll post some pics.:)

Some people might not agree with me but I think the WDFW has been doing a good job with the mule deer herd in the Okonogan area. think . I am a big fan that young people should be out hunting but I think the WDFW need to change their youth hunt rules to three point of better or antlerless. Last year youth hunters shot 118 bucks with their any deer permits in the Chewuck, Pearrygin, Gardner, Pouge Chiwist, and Alta units. I'm not sure how big the bucks were but A bet a lot of them were spikes and two points.

"Last year youth hunters shot 118 bucks with their any deer permits in the Chewuck, Pearrygin, Gardner, Pouge Chiwist, and Alta units."

Craig, the youngens have to step up to the plate with the rest of us this year. I called the region 2 office yesterday and they assured me that the 3 point rule applies to everyone this year, including our youth hunters.......................rf

The three point rule does not apply to the youth permit holders just to non permit holders. The permits were reduced significantly but they still allow youth to shoot any deer. This information is shown on the WDFW website under permit quotas.

I'm a new guy here at monstermuley. Never shot anything huge but have managed to take a buck every yearin WA since 14 years old on public land. I got max points for elk: little naches, got drawn for deer in 2002?in the chiwawa unit- shot a deer in the first 3 minutes of hunting on a five day hunt, a perfect 4 by 4 with eyeguards, scored 151 and change, should of held out but with no weather I could't pass it up! sheep-Quilomene moose- Mt. spokane A-my uncle and a good friend got drawn on partner tag and shot 2nd and 4th in state in 2000(rifle)goat-whatever.
my dad has horrible eyesight and never shot a big deer so I've been trying to figure out how to get one on my own. Can't stand seeing the orange lightbulbs on the opener. Last year backpacked in for five days for the high buck hunt. walked 55 miles, passed up shooter 3 points almost everyday and passed up bear everyday. We were so far in we decided not to shoot anything unless it was big. The evening before the opener we watched a 5 by 5(3 of us watched it and we conservativly guess spread at 35 wide by 24 tall) feed in a clearing for half an hour, it got spooked by a very large bear in the same clearing and to top it off there was two 3 pointers in the same clearing (one was nice with at least a 23 inch spread), hunted the big boy for the next 5 days and never saw him again. oh well maybe this year.
sorry to get off the subject but I needed some new ears to bend. I get lonely going to CWU, don't know anybody. If any of you want to see pics of big bulls from central WA taken by myself and family members let me know, I've got a scanner but not the vaugest idea on how to post.

Welcome to the site. And post any pictures you have. I wish I could find just one bear. Maybe I should try a high hunt one time. Were you from.

If you want them posted, send them to me. If you PM I'll get you the address. We can put them in the Washington Bone topic also in this forum. We'd love to see them if you can scan them. You'll also note that there are several CWU folks on here.

Monster:

Welcome to the site. I love your handle. Thats a good one! Max points for elk, you should be jacked! My buddy drew Little Naches early last year.
Holy crap, he saw a TON of bulls. With those kinda points, you should hold out for only the best elk area. I've never put in for the Chiwawa. Is that a good unit for a late permit hunt?
I drew the Pearrygin in 2001, but those are now slim odds.

Welcome, Sounds like you saw a dandy up on that high buck hunt. How far did you guys actually pack in before you started hunting.

Welcome to the site WWM...Have always wanted to try that high buck hunt...thats some incentive to see that many animals...

Hey Bone...start up WA BoneII the other one is getting too long...you know me short attention span!

Wow those are fast responses.answers in no order: I grew up in Woodinville(I know...you don't have to tell me). moved to Ellensburg to go to school for better access to my stomping grounds. My brother, good friend and I hiked in twelve miles and spike camped on two different mnts.over 5 days at about 7,500 feet. Going back for six days to the same spot, then taking my unblooded girlfriend into another spot in Alpine for 3 more days. The Chiwawa unit can be great as a permit hunt and is underrated in my opinion, but is weather dependent. I really have no idea on how to post pics(where do I start, my email is [email protected] if anybody wants to let me know without filling the site with unwanted material). I already put in for Desert A but I hopefully won't need it!
