388 Lapua opinions for elk?

Do you mean 338 Lapua? Not heard of 388.
If so, it kicks a** on elk!
I don't actually have one, but my buddy does, it's like a 338 win mag on horse juice.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-07 AT 07:08PM (MST)[p]I had a buddy who had a Sako 338 Lapua. Watched him shoot a deer and it blew it in half. He was shooting ballistic tips (I don't know why..) and shot at the deer while it was quartering away. The end result was truly gruesome. It packed a hell of a wallop....

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-07 AT 07:57PM (MST)[p]The .338 Lapua was developed as a military round. Extremely accurate downrange. Fires 300 grain bullets in the 2800 to 2850 fps range. Brass is spendy. I have no idea of availability of factory ammo. If cost isn't a factor, using it shouldn't be a problem. A more logical choice would be the .338 RUM. mtmuley P.S. If you really want to go crazy, the .338 Edge. Essentially a .300 RUM necked up to .338 to take advantage of the .300's extra case capacity.

You might as well use it!!! I saw some joker harvest a Black Bear on TV in Oregon with a 50 CAL!!!! Wait till the antis get ahold of that!!! Good Luck

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-07 AT 06:04PM (MST)[p]couesbitten, the .300 RUM has more case capacity because of seating depth issues with the .338 bullet. It is the only case smaller in the Ultra-Mag lineup. The rest have the same OAL. mtmuley I also posted earlier about a .30-.338 Lapua wildcat my buddy has built. Wants to fire 173 gr G.S. bullets at 3600-3700 fps. We'll see.

mtmuley,

I'm toying with the idea of getting a 338 Lapua. I love my 300RUM and know that it's capable of some looonnngggg shots. I'm just thinking of taking it up a notch for those 1000 plus yarders.

Just curious what your experience has been with accuracy between the 338RUM and the Lapua?

Just got a VRX III 6.5-20 with the M1 turret on it and I'm excited to take my shooting to the next level. (Actually just need an excuse to buy some more toys):)

Prism, Presently, I shoot a .300 RUM also. As far as accuracy is concerned, both the Lapua and the RUM are capable of MOA or less. I am like you though, and the .338 Edge has me interested. Go to longrangehunting.com Even if you never attempt the REALLY long shots, there is a ton of info there to assist even the regular shooter. mtmuley

great caliber. even better would be to take the .408 cheytac and neck it down to .338!
