WY Elk Draw questions

Question for anyone knowledgeable about Wyoming elk draws. Next year, I'll have two elk points going into the draw as I'm hunting CO this fall and am just accumulating points in WY. With two points, do you think a person could draw one of the areas such as 7, 24, or 100?? Or are we better off putting in for a general tag?? We definitely want to hunt next year for either bow or rifle in Wyoming.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-07 AT 07:34AM (MST)[p] GO FOR THE GENERAL TAG, 7,24, & 100 ARE LONG SHOTS WITH A BIG LINE OF HUNTERS ..... BUT NOT MANY PEOPLE HAVE MANY MORE POINTS THAN YOU HAVE. YOUR GETTING CLOSE, STACK ANOTHER POINT OR TWO.....YD.

Those are some of the most popular and most difficult to draw units in Wyoming. Unit 7 draw odds are around 15 % with the special license but unit 100 is less than 5 %. Because you're in the 2 point pool no one will have better odds than you. Your odds should be a little better than whats listed above because of that. However, if you ''definitely want to hunt next year for either bow or rifle in Wyoming '' then you should probably go for the general tag. GOOD LUCK. C.C.

You are guarenteed to draw a general tag, cheapie fee too. If you want a tag as you said that is the way to go for sure.

I'm thinkin' maybe someone knowledgable with the non-Res. draw system at G&F, or a sharp cookie here, might be able to answer a question you may wish to consider:
Does your Second Choice with Two Points take draw priority over any one's First Choice with One Point for the same Area and Type?
Special or Regular, would be a good thing to know considering odds for Non's in Lim. Quota areas.
I'm a Res., so it don't matter to me as of yet. But just 'cause you ain't from Wyo, don't mean I'm not lookin' out fer ya!!

Thanx everyone for your input and,Rumproast, I do appreciate you looking out for us Non Reskies!! :D Just wondering if I did put in for a draw unit with first choice whether we'd draw a general tag with 2nd choice if we didn't get the first?? I may have to call the Wyoming fish and game to see if there are any verifiable odds on that. My friend and I do have max points for non res from what I've read as they instituted the non res pref point thing in 2005 the first year we bought a point. We'll figure it out...

Unit 7 had 1500 tags for any elk. 2 points you would be looking good.

Your points ARE NOT used for 2nd choice so if you drew a 2nd choice tag you would go into the next year with 3 elk points.

I would certainly look at the late Cody area bull hunts with 2 pts..

There are a few guys that drew unit 19 2nd choice--pricey fee.

Yo-Rump... where ya been?

There were 1871 non residents that applied for 150 type 1 antlered Elk tags in unit 7 last year in the special tag and regular tag draw combined. The odds of drawing a general tag were 41 % so you would not get a general tag as your second choice. All first choices are honored before any second. In other words a 2 point holders second choice would not trump a 1 point holders first choice. GOOD LUCK. C.C.

Hey, Robb!
Things have just been plain busy in the off-huntin' season!
Immersed in work.
Immersed in other people's work!
Immersed in the work their people didn't get done!
Can't really knock it--Five weeks 'til my first tag goes active, though!
Got a bunch of kids' stuff comin' up, too--they're way due!
Figure it's just about time to lay off the git-'er-done for a spell.
Can't wait for September--I am fresh out of Elk!

Net has been acting a little funny here in the past five days--pardon the delayed acknowledgement!
