Marble Mountain Rosies

Guys...my buddy and I were lucky enough to draw tags this year and have located some good spots, but would love to have that one extra spot to keep in our back pockets. We are both backpack hunters and are not afraid to get miles away from any road/trailhead. I am concerned that 90% of the outfitters will be in the same area (NW side of the wilderness)...is that something I need to worry about or does the small number of tags spread people out enough so that it isn't an issue?
Anybody have any info they would like to share?

Hey DW;

Good draw! Don't for get something rather important.....you say you and your buddy backpack hunters, think about it......the season opens I believe 9/5 and big bull rosies are gonna give you 700+ lbs of quartered meat (inc straps & neck), the temp is gonna be 85 degrees plus. How are you going to get that out and to the locker before it spoils? I'm not trying to trash you, I'm trying to help. A couple of years back we were in there with tags, horses & camp. Got two bulls down and worked our butts off getting them out in good condition, others weren't so fortunate. If you try to hang them overnight, the bears are gonna love it. You can't do several trips backpacking 'cause by the time you get back with the second & third loads, the first one has spoiled.

The bulls are there, just keep at it. The country is thick enough that you will only see a few people inside the wilderness. It seemed like most drove the roads outside and the ones inside, used the outfitters.

I'll be at it there somewhere helping one of my buddies.

If you're outside the wilderness, consider a portable chainsaw with a winch attachment. It saves climbing out of a steep, brushy $*#!^*$( draw.

Good luck.

I will second what nocal said about not being able to get them out in time. The guy i know last year said that by the time they cut the elk up and put it on the mules and headed for town got to the locker it took them like 14 hours. He said some of the neck even spoiled at that. He was in there with mules and fully set up to handle a elk but it was still crazy trying to get him out in time. He also said the bears were so thick u saw more bears than any other type of critter.

WILDERNESS.....(WAY IN PAST THE GUIDES)
All the guides and outfitters are set up (camps) on the trail heads are close to them, and move farther in if necessary I hunted it and never fired a shot on two "OK bulls" but had no chance for meat recovery so I walk and kept closer to the roads!I saw about 50/60 bears!!! they are every where..tons of them..lots of them..lots of sows with cubs so be careful!!
Happy camp just had a nice fire and a good green up is gonna happen soon! their are some of those guys around or even the stock handler for the guide that will retrieve your Elk for a fee(maybe 3 or 4 hundred$$) I heard of!
next time I spend the 4k for Mc Broom!

Hey DW;

This morning's paper had a story of cars being burned at the Haypress trailhead to the Marbles (west side of wilderness). Sorry for the bad news...I'm sure the Lawdogs are gonna be on it though.

sweet..............
don't worry those engines will clean the road soon enough!

If you know the guides/outfitters in that area contact them now. See how much they would charge to haul your elk out. The price can be as high as 400 dollars and as cheap as 100.

Thanks guys...do you have any info on people that are just a call away to haul a bull out of the wilderness?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-06-07 AT 10:52PM (MST)[p]The McBroom boys will be at the trailhead all season. They will be guiding clients and they have quite a packstring. They may or may not be willing to pack for ya. Money talks!! 530-462-4617
You might not need to get to far in, i just saw about 20 elk in the middle of hwy 96 saturday night just above Ti Bar, 1 small bull. There have been many huge bulls killed within a mile or less of the trailhead. It can happen.
