I just learned that I drew an early deer tag for unit 471. Can anyone give me some general information about the unit and some areas that may hold bucks in early September? Thanks in advance for your help.

Better be in goat shape and plan on doing some walking up into the higher basins. Country is steep and not much fun in most of the lower elevations but up where you will be hunting there are big open basins well above timberline that hold some good deer. Check out upper Columbia and the south side of Mt. Shimer. Thats a nice little walk.

Thanks so much for your quick reply and the information you provided. My step dad drew a goat tag in the wilderness portion of the Uinta mountains in Utah so I've been working out a lot so I can help him on his hunt. This will be extra motivation to really get in top shape. Is there enough water in these areas that I won't have to carry it in?

Regards,
Todd

Yes there is plenty water in just about every basin up there. Springs, seeps, creeks and willow ponds in most places even during the hottest months. Bring a water purifier and you'll be set. I doubt you'll have a hard time finding water or deer. Good luck in Utah to your step dad and to you in CO.
