I think the vast differences in compensation between victims of the September 11 casualty and those who die serving the country in Uniform are profound. No one is really talking about it either, because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11. Well, I just can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the
entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September 11 attack, you're going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million.

If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable.
Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt.

Keep in mind that some of the people who are getting an average of $1.185 million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it's not enough. Their deaths were tragic, but for most, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Soldiers put themselves in
harms way FOR ALL OF US, and they and their families know the dangers.

We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11 families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation as well.

You see where this is going, don't you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over 50 years of entitlement politics in this country. It's just really sad. Every time a pay raise comes up for the military, they usually receive next to nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live
in low-rent housing. Make sense?

However, our own U.S. Congress just voted themselves a raise, and many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one time to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month, and most are now equal to being millionaires plus. They also do not receive
Social Security on retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system.

If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7, you may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed you in harm's way receive a pension of $15,000 per month.
I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now fighting.

"When do we finally do something about this?" If this doesn't seem fair to you, it is time to forward this to as many people as you can.If your interested there is more.......................

This must be a campaign issue in 2004. Keep it going.

SOCIAL SECURITY: (This is worth the read. It's short
and to the point.)

Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years. Our Senators and Congressmen do not pay into Social Security. Many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan. In more recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change it. For all practical purposes their plan works like this:

When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die, except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments. For example, former Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their
wives may expect to draw $7,800,000 - that's Seven Million, Eight Hundred Thousand), with their wives drawing $275,000.00 during the last years of their lives.

This is calculated on an average life span for each.

Their cost for this excellent plan is $00.00. These little perks they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab for this plan.

The funds for this fine retirement plan come directly from the General Fund--our tax dollars at work! From our own Social
Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid) into -- every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our employer) --we can expect to get an average $1,000 per month after retirement. Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of $1,000 monthly benefits for 68 years and one month to
equal Senator Bill Bradley's benefits!

Social Security could be very good if only one small change were made. And that change would be to jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators an Congressmen. Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us and then watch how
fast they would fix it.

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of
awareness will be planted and maybe good changes will evolve. WE, each one of us... can make a difference..

That is right on.

Drum

PS, I will be running on the republican ticket next election.

and republicans are not guilty of this?

come on, both the democrats and republicans are laying in the same bed if you didnt figure that out yet. look at teh lst fours years, Republicans can outspend and go into debt like any liber Democrat..we need new parties

Who had to bring up republican or democrat. Thats just plain sick all around!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if you want to talk politics, lets bring up gun control issues, then we can talk democrat and republican.

At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new
constitution, in the year 1787, Alexander Tyler (a Scottish history
professor at The University of Edinborough) had this to say about
"The Fall of The Athenian Republic" some 2,000 years prior.

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist
as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to
exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote
themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that
moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise
the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that
every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy,
(which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the
beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200
years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From Bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St.
Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the
most recent Presidential election:

Population of counties won by:

Gore=127 million
Bush=143 million

Square miles of land won by:

Gore=580,000
Bush=2,2427,000

States won by:

Gore=19
Bush=29

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:

Gore=13.2
Bush=2.1

Professor Olson adds:

"In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was mostly the land
owned by the tax-paying citizens of this great country. Gore's
territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in
government-owned tenements and living off government welfare..."

Olson believes the U.S. is now somewhere between the "complacency
and "apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy;
with some 40 percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

There is an overwhelming abundance of people in this country that feel that they are entitled to monetary compensation based mainly on self pitty. Sure 911 was horrific and the victims and families should get a little somehting, but millions? Come on, what ever happened to actually earning a living instead of trying to milk the system for all that you can?

The families of those serving in the middle east deserve to be compensated much more than they are. Those folks are "earning" an entitlement. They are actually doing something to benefit all, not just themselves. It is much different than tyring to capitalize on a tragedy, such as some of the "victims" of 911, OK City bombing etc. Or even, for example, those asinine settlements from the tobacco industry, etc.

Ok... enough ranting! Hahaaaaaa..... Hell, it is 4:30 am. I must be goofy from lack of sleep.

I am having trouble finding anything about mule deer in this post and replies. Did I miss something? Should this be in the campfire area?

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Polarbear is right on. Complacency is the killer. I know I for one am sick of the way this countries poloitical system is headed, but what are we doing about it? I happen to have a slightly different take on what is the root of all evil in this country. Think about it, what is causing the climate of greed? It's the damned lawyers and judges. The lawyers are greedy, immoral SOB's and the judges have lost their collective minds. Just look at the rediculous damages awards they have been handing down lately. (Ex: Getting millions for spilling coffee on you lap while driving. Millions for family members killed in a bombing. Millions for this and millions for that.) I know their are times when damages are due, but because of these excessively high awards and lawyer dogs convincing everyone that someone must pay for wronging them, the american public is buying into all this. Kids are now growing up thinking that anytime something bad happens, somone must be at fault. Heaven forbid we teach accountability in this country. In my humble opinion, if the judges would start using common sense to their rulings, and stop relying so much on presedence and strang interpretation of the laws, this country could start righting the ship.

I'll try not to explode here, but this has all to do with serious hunters. These are the same idoits that will take away your hunting. Judges in Arizona doing things they shouldn't but have the power too. Governors in this state where trapping was made legal again by both the Senate and the house, but one man, Govenor Locke, vetoed it and made it illegal again because it wasn't what he thought the people really wanted. Excuse me, then why did we elect these people to represent us. No more hound hunting because of the poor little cougars. Now they are after bowhunting because its not ethical. How about your buddy Gore, who wanted to make 1/2 of the state of Washington a national park. Those who owned land in the area he wanted, tough cookies, the government was going to take it. In this park there was to be no horsebackriding, bike riding, etc. EXCUSE me, you don't think that has anything to do with hunting. Some of you must be part of the complacency, apathetic or is it pathetic, crowd. Majority rules. Hound hunting was voted in in all but one county in Washington. In that one county, KING, the people voted against it. There were enough votes in downtown Seattle to ban hound hunting. Are there enough people in King county who think killing a deer is wrong???????????

Its all about the "filter" that you look at life through. Ask the people of Garfield and Mesa counties in the state of Colorado about our conservative administration and the absolute uncontrollable natural gas drilling going on in every single sagebrush flat and winter range in those counties. Our republican leaders are a friend to the gunowner but I really have a great deal of trouble seeing how they are a friend to mule deer and those who love wildlife. You've got your head in the sand or somewhere else dark and stinky if you think otherwise. By the way. I vote for Bush only because I think he is lesser of two evils and has a certain moral fiber that the liberals totally lack.

"I vote for Bush only because
>I think he is lesser
>of two evils and has

True, but how would you do if you were put into a position just managed by Clinton?

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Thats basically the whole jist of this column. They all have their heads up their butts. I absolutely agree with you about your voting preference. Its all about the green machine. That greedy machine opened logging back up in my neck of the woods, which has done more good for wildlife than bad. Theres one bonus for wildlife from this administration. Clinton wouldn't know wildlife habitat if it bit him in the A$$ets.

Man, dont get me started on Gary f-ing Locke! He is a worthless piece of feces! He has done more to f-up fishing, hunting, logging and the job market in this state than anyone else before him!
Ok, enough!
