Please Help! I drew an archery elk tag for the Mt. Dutton area. Is there anyone out there with some helpful info. on the area. I would very much appreciate all the help you can give me. thanks, artsix

Dude, you have an awsome tag. Hope you got some legs! Not many roads on the Dutton!

It is a great hunt but extremely physically challenging unit. I had tag in 05 and after 7 of the hardest days of archery elk hunting lucked out and got a 356 bull. Only a third of bow hunters score on the unit. You need to get off the roads and away from the crowds on the hunt. Hunted high, hunted middle, and hunted low and saw elk in every area. The bottom of canyons in the burn are small aspen jungles were we got into the elk.
I didn't hunt one area I wanted too because would of been a hall down in or up to from bottom but looked good on the map on the west side below mt dutton- there is a trail down.
The archery hunt they don't talk like they do during any weapon. We didn't have many get excited about calling until Labor Day weekend when as Mike Eastman calls it we got into the rut feast and had four bulls going a couple hours until I scored. Some big herds with many eyes and noses that makes hard- spot and stocking was fun on some.
biggest bulls are hidding during archery season and way back in.

Just a quick question WHY put in for an area you know nothing about and then two weeks before the hunt start hitting the internet for suggestions?

because he can, and he will get info. Gotta love the net

I have been on the net for months, just not on this site. A person I have been communicating with from another site, referred me.
And for the other question about putting in for a place I knew nothing about. I did not expect to draw this tag so soon and was planning a muley hunt there next year. But, by the grace of God I drew and I want to make the best of it. thanks, artsix

art,

I don't know how much time you have to hunt but the first couple of weeks can be discouraging on Dutton. I've hunted with three differnt guys down there and all killed in the last week of the hunt when the bulls are more vocal.

I agree with Antler1. I had the tag in 2004. I hunted the last 10 days of the hunt. We got into mature bulls nearly every day, but the last 4 days were unreal.

I very much appreciate all the help. You guys are true hunters and sportsmen. I will use all your advise and keep you posted about the hunt. Again, thanks for your help and good luck on your hunts.
