We drew a couple of Ranching for Wildlife either-sex elk tags this year on the Deakins Ranch (just west of Craig, CO.)

Anyone here ever hunt that ranch before? We've heard that in years past, either the place was thick with elk, or they weren't there at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Haven't hunted it but I hunt alot around Craig. If it's west of Craig in the sage hills you will probably want some snow in the mountains east of Craig. This will begin to move the elk west to their winter grounds. During the late seasons the area around of Craig is usually full of elk.

when are your tags for? the later the better we hunt all around it and kill a lot of elk every year. good luck it should be a good time...

Deakins has a split season on either-sex elk. 14 to 18 Nov and 2 to 9 Jan.

YOU SHOULD SEE SEVERAL HUNDRED ELK. A LOT OF COWS AND RAGHORN BULLS. A FEW GOOD BULLS CALL THAT COUNTRY HOME IN THE WINTER. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN.

Hey - I've never hunted there, but have often wondered what it's like. It takes the least pref points to get a RFW tag so I assume it isn't great.

Would be interested in knowing how you do there.

I don't know what happened...I replied to your post and now it ain't there. I must have done something wrong...but now you get the Reader's Digest version...

I may hunting the same hunt. I have a cow license. The public land around there sees a ton of pressure. The private land almost always is pretty good for critters. If there is a LOT of snow, read feet, up high, then the elk will be lower down. Even though it is relatively close to me, I have not been in that area.

I also got drawn for a deer hunt on the same ranch.

The numbers on the DOW website are pretty good...about 10X higher than any public land hunt...in CO, not NM or AZ.
