Well, I finally drew a Nev. deer tag. I'm a N/R,and need any kind of assistance or ideas of where to start on this unit. Never hunted it before. Have any of you guys either hunted it or even heard anything about this unit. I under stand that its about 30 miles from Reno. Any kind of info. or kind words would be great. Thanks Mark

AZarcher,

Dave go to this website www.ndow.org and then click on the Hunting drop down, then on Area & Unit Descriptions. Then on Species & Hunt Info Sheets. Then go to Mule Deer then then the Western (1)
This will show you all of the Units assigned in Western Region (1) and then just scroll down to Unit 195 and click on it and then print it out.
Doesn't look too promising but you will for sure have to do a lot of calling and/or pre-hunt trips to the area. Sounds like talking with ranch owners is going to be your best bet.
Is your tag for Rifle, Muzz or Archery?? This might be an advantage but not sure.
Contact the F&G Bio. for the area and maybe he can help you out. Good luck with your hunt.

Brian

Kilowatt, Brian, Thanks for the info. I will do as you said and see what I can find out from there. Thanks, Mark

LAST EDITED ON Jul-02-04 AT 01:49PM (MST)[p]Assuming you do not have private access along the river, that unit is mostly Pinon/Juniper country with a lot of sage. Is also dry too. The higher ranges will hold some springs with aspen draws. I'd concentrate my glassing there. Get high, bring a seat cushion and top notch optics.

Bigpig,
Have you ever hunted this unit. Do you know anything about numbers of deer or the quality of the deer in the unit.
This hunt starts the end of Oct. and runs the whole month of Nov. Is there any time better then an other that I should be looking to hunt. ie peak of the rut. Do you know the approx. time of the peak rut. Also, should I expect snow in this country at this time of the year. Thanks, Mark

Wouldn't worry too much about snow with the falls we've been having lately the area is filled with good roads. Based your hunt dates you have a rifle tag, seems like I always see deer movement increase right around the third week of Nov. Feel free to shoot me an email. Jason

Honker,

Jason, Your right. I have the rifle hunt in Nov. My E-mail address is ([email protected]) Would you say that the third week would be more of the peak rut. I only have about a week to a week and a half for the hunt, so I'm trying to decide what would be the better time to go.

I'm also trying to decide if I should fly to Reno and rent a truck, or drive myself from Phoenix and take a 4 wheel Quad with me! You said there are lot of good roads throughout the unit.
Two wheel or 4 wheel???

Please E-mail me, and also give me a phone # that I can call you at to learn a little more about the unit. Thanks, Mark
