AZ QUESTIONS

Just a couple of stupid questions about Arizona. Is it worth it to transport a 4 wheeler to get game out in Arizona and is it legal? What does a non-res have to do to ride legal in Az. And how good is the cell service in unit 9. I have a sick father that I want to keep tabs on, while I'm out doing what he would love to do. Are there spots I can get service or should I rent a sat phone?

Yes you can ride off trail to pick up an animal as long as you don't ride through a meadow and the ground is dry enough not to do any damage. Most of the roads now require a license on the ATV which means mirror, horn and brake light. I just put that stuff on mine to get a plate. Lots of areas with cell coverage but not sure about 9 as that is not my area. Good luck on your hunt.

There is cell service in certain spots up there, but not many. We usually climb the Grand View tower to get our cell service. If you need cell service all the time I would consider purchasing a satellite phone for that unit...

The only limit on driving is that you don't destroy the roads that are "roads".....during rainy days when roads get sloppy.

You can be fined for every mile you tear-up.

There is no limit to where you drive, unless posted....non-motorized.

Meadows are fair game & legal, unfortunately!!!

Alltel service works the best as this is the only cell tower currently on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. You can get Version at Valle real good and spotty around other parts of the unit. Grand View like a previous post said has decent service as it is a high spot in the unit. There are designated no vehicle traffic areas in the unit, all the new forest service maps will designate all of these areas. You can go any where else in the unit to retrieve game. I hope this helps, you must be feeling luck to have an elk tag. Good luck.

I was in unit 9 and 10 this weekend shooting a few prairie dogs and my verizon service actually worked quite well I was surprised.

I think ATV's are not allowed on any county road or forest road marked with horizontal numbers unless it is street legal. They are allowed on roads or legal trails marked with vertical numbers. You can travel cross country to retrieve downed game if legal to do so on the land in question, although it won't be long before cross country travel is outlawed. Check with local forest, blm, or state land offices for your area.
My quad is street legal and it is allowed anywhere a car or truck is allowed, in Arizona anyway.

right - quads must be street legal(rear view mirror, horn, lighted license plate and insured). Bring it! surebeats tearing up the truck.

Although i can't help you with either of them jredbuck, but your questions are hardly what i'd call "stupid".
"Stupid" would be the guy who went over there hunting and didn't ask these types of questions before he left.
Both are very legitimate questions.

Sounds like you'll have any easier time getting your animal out by being able to use your ATV, and you can give us a call from the back country and fill us in on the hunt!! :)

bassn,
I think you got your info wrong. If you drive through a meadow, you can be fined $5000 per foot, per track...that's $10k per foot in a car or on a quad! That includes retreaving game. It's in the regs.
