Can anybody out there give me the time of year when i can expect to hear the roosevelts in northwest oregon starting to call, and when do they actually start an active rut? Im a bowhunter so im hoping they will start in early september, can I expect any rut action before the 25th of september?

I live in eastern Oregon and the Rocky elk here are start to rut anytime after the middle of September, I hear them most nights. the Roosevelt's I'd expect to be about the same, call the Jewell Refuge in Mist ,they could tell you to the day what they did last year I'll bet you.

In my experience Roosevelts are not as vocal as Rocky Mt Elk, they seem to be quieter and will sneek in on you without making a sound. Get ready to hunt in a jungle, good luck

Rich, so when you say that they dont call much but come in quiet do you suggest that i still call even if they arent? I just moved up to oregon for college and am used to hunting the rocky mountain elk not these roosevelts. but your right on about it being a jungle, these forests amaze me.

Unless you are hunting private, I doubt you'll hear them bugle. The forest and canyons simply swallow up the sound. Most bulls I've called in did'nt come to me, but followed a cow that wanted to see what I looked like and the bull followed her.

I am a newby read a lot of post but don reply much. From my experience and what friends have told me usually the bulls are more vocal early. Last year the first two weekends bulls were talking and the third they were not at least where I was. Then I went over east so I dont know about the rest of the season. This was central coast around Florence.

I'm no expert...actually I'm a newbie to elk hunting, but if they're like Washington Rosies they should be bugling in September.

Check out the Angry Spike videos for some great Roosevelt elk hunting footage.

I am normally hunting out of la grande but went down to roseburg and called in a nice 6x7 last year. 2nd week of season, they were not talking but myself and a buddy cow called half way down a hill and had the bull come charging in. He did not talk at all. yes you can call them in, but bet option is to stay on a well used travel route imo.

I've hunted the Oregon coast for many years. I think they're the most vocal between the 15th and 20th of September. They're still pretty vocal after the 20th but the herd bulls seem to have them rounded up and down in a brush hole and only seem to just grunt or short bugle just to keep them close.

I recommend you find some areas with creek bottoms in a remote or hard to get to area. They've got to have food, water, and a safe place to live. That's where I've had luck finding them.

I killed a bull on 9/17 last year and I got close because the herd bull was so vocal it was like sneaking in on a fog horn.

Good luck!
