Last years public land DIY NM bull. Downed it about 10 miles from my vehicle. No field pic because I forgot to take the camera and there was no way I was going back to get it. Had a real good buddy pretty much give up the rest of his hunt to help me cape, bone, and pack the beast out; took us three days. Afterwards, I swore I'd never do such a thing again. But here I am one year later scouting the exact same area in great anticipation of the upcoming muzzleloader. May you all likewise be as forgetful about your packouts... :)

Moz,

Nice bull, real nice bull, wish I was going in with you this year. Good luck man.

Thanks Johnny.

One more, same unit, same buddy, but a couple years earlier and not quite so far in...

Too funy! Reminds me of the greatest day of fishing I have ever had in my whole life up in Alaska. Took a fly out for kings and dogs. Caught over 20 fish - had them on every cast there for a while. Most of the kings over 25 lbs and the dogs over 12. The fly out was great but the fly back was the single worst experience of my life. I got so air sick I kissed the ground when I got down and swore I would never get in that small of a plane ever ever ever again and that no amount of fish was ever worth it - took all the intestinal fortitude I had to not blow chunks all over the rest of the passengers. But, looking back, I would have gone out again the very next day, had they asked,a nd I am for sure ready to go again! Someday...

Kinda like birthin' babies, huh? You forget all about the pain and do it again. Oh wait....you're a guy, you don't know nuttin' bout birthin' no babies. LOL SWEET Bull, Mozey. Good luck on your muzz hunt.

Mozey , great bulls . Yeah I also killed an elk in 16B and swore I'd never kill another elk that far from a vehicle let alone a cow. I've actually been pretty lucky too , been able to get to all the animals I've ever killed since then. Sounds to me like you also have yourself a pretty good friend to help you out to what could be considered his loss but I'll bet he helped you with no regrets and I also bet if the shoe were on the other foot , you'd gladly help him out. Thanks for sharing em ...Larry

LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-07 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]Dido,
But used horses.
Never leave home with out them.
something my papy taught me or told me once.
you make the mastake the first time its a mistake,
the second time your a fool.

Jenn: you win. I don't know nuttin' bout birthin babies. But from what I've seen, I'd rather pack an elk 20 miles, without a good buddy's help... ;-)

Roy: you understand; like the time I got so seasick down in the Gulf that I caught the biggest red snapper of my life by ceaslessly chumming over the side with my puke. I'd do it again...

NMNutt: truth be told, I did help said good buddy pack out an elk each of the two previous years, one being a bigger bodied bull than mine a mile or so up a mountain so steep we had to sometimes get on all fours. After last years little affair though, I'm pretty well planted back in the "I owe him" column. He gets first shot this year.

ELK101: I'm jealous. My 13-year old tells me that someday she's going to marry a millionnaire rancher and then I can have access to all the horses I want. Hopefully, that's not going to happen for a least another decade. Until then, we purposely try to hunt areas that are next to impossible to get a horse into, as we don't want the competition. Color us fools... ;-)

Thanks all, for the comments, I enjoyed reading them. :)
