Since Paul wouldn't post these ;-), I'll post them myself. He killed this ol' boy last year in unit 5A NM. It's a great buck, and made a really nice mount. Maybe Paul will come on here and tell the story.

Man I thought that was only a "forkie" till I saw the second picture and those little stickers in front. That is a very impressive looking buck, wonder if it was regressing, getting older?

Brian

kilo, it was definately regressing. I mounted it for Paul, and when you looked in the mouth, there was no teeth left. You can see how white his face was, too. The weird thing was that he did not have a roman nose, like the old buck typically do.

Just think if you found his sheds, you'd say they were from two different bucks. The bases don't look similar. Awesome buck and pretty mount, good job!

Danny, thank you for posting the pics and thanks again for the fantastic mount. You are a perfectionist!

So here is the story:

My hunt started on a Tuesday. The first day, I hunted by glassing and still hunting, but did not see a single deer.

Wednesday came and it was raining all day. At first light I saw 12 doe feeding. All day I ran into doe/fawns, the deer seemed to be out feeding preparing for the snow. I did get to see a hunter on a ranch just to the south of me shoot a nice 3x3.

Thursday- I woke to 1 inch of snow and I was optimistic. I saw a few scattered doe/fawns in the morning and by noon the snow had melted and it had turned into a muddy mess as it began to rain. Thursday afternoon I decided to hunt a new area (to the north). I saw 4 deer while glassing a meadow but couldn't tell what they were as they vanished into the trees. My father arrived Thursday night.

Friday- we saw pockets of doe/fawn feeding in meadows and bedded in the trees ? all day. I started to actually get tired of seeing deer because I knew when we would run into them they would not have antlers.

Saturday- morning: we saw several groups of doe/fawns. Still not a single buck. I started thinking that there were no bucks on the 1000acre ranch that we were hunting. Friday afternoon we continued to see does and my father said " The law of averages is in our favor as we have seen close to 100 doe/fawn we are sure to see a buck". Just before sundown we had finished covering the areas where we had been seeing the most deer and sign. Still, no "antlers".

There were about 30 minutes left of legal shooting light when we started heading back to camp. I decided to take one more look in a meadow where we had been seeing deer. This meadow is about 450 yds wide and 200 yds deep, it is surrounded by nice cover and a ridge the runs along the width of it.

As we approached an opening, where we could see the entire meadow, we immediately saw a big blocky dark figure (at about 300yds away). We saw it at the same time and froze. At the instant I saw it, my adrenaline kicked in and before my mind could even register what it was, I "Felt" that it was a buck. Very hard to explain but I just sensed that this was the "Chance". I raised the binos and all I saw was a large gray body with a nice set of antlers above the ears. At that moment I told my father quietly but enthusiastically "It's a BUCK and its big?!!!! I did not look at the buck for more than 2 seconds. I did not take a longer look for two reasons: 1. It was getting late and shooting time would be coming to an end very soon. 2. He was looking right at us and he had us pegged. I didn't want to waste time and risk him bolting off.

After I lowered the binos we chambered some rounds and I told my father it would be about a 300yd shot. I didn't think we should take the shot from that distance because the sun was going down over the ridge behind the deer and the glare would be in our eyes/scopes plus the shadows being cast would make it difficult to see well. I did not know what to do??? I knew I did not want to take the shot from where we were and I thought if we tried to get closer he would bolt. I asked my father "what should we do"? My father said "Let's move in closer". We started closing the distance as we moved parallel to him along the line of trees and sage brush. I kept telling my dad "back me up, back me up, be ready..." (I was worried that the buck would start trotting and/or bolting off as we got near him, but instead the buck was like a statue the whole time. I am certain he didn't move a single inch from where we first spotted him.)

We got to within approx 100yds and I took a good steady (the buck was positioned almost broadside, he was quartering in at about 15 degrees, head to my right/back end to my left). I found his dark gray body in my scope, then I started to rush to put the cross hairs on his vitals, then I told myself to slow down. I started to get a calm feeling and when I was steady I took my time squeezing the trigger. BOOM!!!! The bucks rear dropped, he stood up on his back legs like a horse and made a half turn counterclockwise and fell. My father and started celebrating, then all of a sudden my dad said "He's up!!" The buck was back on all fours and it looked like he was ready to start bolting. I loaded another round in the chamber, but when I put the scope on him he fell again and that was it.

When we got to him we couldn't believe the body size. The antlers were awesome: nice width, height, and mass.
That body really stood out. This buck had a huge neck and he was fat & compact in body size. He must have weighed between 275 and 300lbs. Needless to say the work began at this point?.

We hunted the next morning (Sunday) hoping to find one for my father, but all we saw were doe. At the end of the hunt we were both very grateful to have been blessed with such a safe and enjoyable hunting experience.

I would like to thank my father for his guidance and advice during this hunt and all the years we have hunted together. I would also like to thank my wife and mother for their support on all of our hunting ?adventures?. We missed their company on this trip as they could not get away from work.

Nice Deer!!!! I didn't think anything about it when Paul told me he bagged a nice 5 point Buck, because I also got a 5 point buck Last Year. Then when he showed me a pic before he got it mounted, I was amazed. After that I didn't even want to show him a pic of My Buck. WOW Ive never seen a 5 point that big before. I'd like the see what he scores.
