well, not really a contest....it was just 'him & me'...been trying to 'lay eyes' on him for three days...he keeps 'talking' back to me, but couldn't see him...he has about 20 cows with him. have no problem finding him, as he has a very distinct 'bugle', but dang, he just wouldn't 'show'...till today, that is...

these little buggers kept hanging around...

a tall spike..

the fog rolled in, and i thought the 'show was over'. then this one dropped under the fog, and started coming right to me...

then, the one i've been trying to 'see', finally showed...not the biggest on the hill, by any means, but sure was fun the past three days, just trying to 'get on him'...i saw a really nice one 'across the valley'...believe i'll try for him tomorrow...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-07 AT 07:05PM (MST)[p]great pictures Gentry! Can't wait until this weekend when we'll be out "bugling" for bulls in hopes of sticking one. Hope to get some good pictures of big Roosey's!

Oh..... Do you have his "horns"?? :)

Gentry, how far off would you say the rut is in that area?

Very cool! Where are you located? I know that they are really coming in good in Utah right now. Us here in Oregon will have to wait a few weeks before we get them fired up.

matt....no. i think i do not have his from last year. possibly 2 years ago, but hard to tell for sure. will give it my best effort this 'spring'...luck with the 'rooseys'...

michael... many around here, whom only get out during hunting season, say 'no way'...but, in 'my book', the rut around here started on the 19th of august (last sunday). the bigger bulls were gathering cows and already chasing off the smaller bulls. they are bugling in earnest early each morning for about an hour. they are definitely coming in to my calls...both bugling and cow calling. i ain't no expert when it comes to elk, but i know what i'm seeing and hearing...i can also tell you, that it ain't nuthin' but FUN...

graysage...have been seeing many 'hard-boned' bulls, but they are mostly the bigger ones. look at the spike in the pics...still velvet. had a decent 5 point come in to a cow call 2 mornings ago, he had velvet hangin' all over him. half on/half off. i did take pics, but it was so early in the morn (dark) that i deleted them. i should have saved them, as you could still see the junk hangin' from his head...will try and get some more tomorrow...

3fer...i be in washington..

Sounds great Gentry! Hopefully they'll be all sorts of fired up come the 8th when my hunt starts!
