Elk hunt during the rut with a rifle? Best options?
Looking to do something in 2008. I put in for limited entry tags in 4 states. What else? Where can you go.

CWMU's in Utah have tags you can purchase or put in for the draw of public tags given out on the CWMU's. You can also purchase elk tags on a Ranching for Wildlife unit in Colorado and hunt during the rut. Utah definately has the bigger bulls. I hope that helps.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-07 AT 10:35PM (MST)[p]Wyoming just below the Yellowstone Park up in the Wilderness, but as a NR you will need an Outfitter. Seasons start on Sept. 10th with a rifle in Unit 60.

I got a pp for Wyoming. Any recommendations on an outfitter? Also, I hunted around the park last year.

If you want a great bugle rifle hunt and a 28 mile pack trip back in the Thorofare then book a hunt with Yellowstone Outfitters. Lynn Madsen is a great guy who truly wants his clients to do well.

Several units in Montana allow "wilderness" rifle hunts during the elk rut. Check it out.

Montana's good but Idaho in the Frank Church is OTC. Either pack in or fly in. Quality isn't top notch but they're bugling and you'll have a rifle in your hand. GOD laughed when he made that country and thought about elk hunters. Steep doesn't even come close to describing it.

I was under the impression that the Montana Wilderness Hunts were a real low odds type of hunt. Even the outfitter that I used last year told me that they didn't even break 10% success I believe. Thanks for the replies keep them coming.

wholelota...I understand what you mean but others may not. Non-residents cannot apply for or purchase Ranching for Wildlife tags in Colorado...unless, they buy it through the guide that leases the ranch. So the tag may cost anywhere from $4500-$10,000 depending on the ranch. And yes, those tags are good during the rut and those hunters always hunt before the public draw hunters on the ranch.
