LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-04 AT 03:09PM (MST)[p]Well, I think its getting close enough that some of us have already conjured up visions and dreams of "the buck" we're gonna kill this year. So what'll it be? Call your shot, what are holding out for? Rattle of your 2004 criteria...

As for me...
In 2003 I let a 26" 4x4 with a 3" kicker enjoy another year of life while in pursuit of his older brother (a heart stoppin' heavy muth-a-f-aaaaa that I still lose sleep over)got the best of me.

-so-

This year I'll be crawling around bustin' my hump trying to let the air out of one of those two charachters (or any other buck that's heavy antlered, tall, and wide with something to make me go numb!!!) . If I fail at that mission, I wouldn't want to be a forkie on the last evening of the season if my tag hasn't been punched yet, for thy freezer is empty after lots of good BBQ, I'm going through withdrawls. Unless of course I am able to unleash an arrow on a nice fat little Kalifornia freezer buck, in that case....I'll be on the brothers like white on rice till the fat lady belts one out.

So let's hear it........

Most important, Have fun and be safe!!!

I agree it is getting close. the days seem to just drag on by. Looking towards this next season:

320" elk - muzzle loader
90" coues - rifle
34" oryx - rifle
160" whitetail - rifle/ muzzle loader

Should be a fun filled year even if we don't harvest a single thing.

Lar,

Aiming to fill a couple of empty spots downstairs in the den. Thinking time is about do, for some new editions/rearranging/decorations! :)

I hoping for a couple of nice four point bucks - I'm not to picky on score. Also hoping to bag a bull elk. Brian

O,

Nothing like a good home improvement project!! You can never have too much "wildlife art". I'll holler at ya when we get some cold in the air to chute the chit.....

God Willing:
a 160 inch moose with my Dad
a 180 trash factor buck with an old huntin' buddy(out of state)
a 300 pound blackie
a spike bull elk
and a 30 inch High country buck I missed last year.

For Blacktails, on the ranch 22inch 4x4 or better. Ya right. Off the ranch standard 2x2 for meat!
Nevada archery, Nice 3x3 or better I hope. Ya right

Mexico, I don't score stuff, but 180 would get me. Heck, I don't really know. I saw two that blew me away last year. One of those would work. I am going to hunt dinks down there too. Hell 110. Five point, I thing my alternative hunting methods will work on driving those dinks. I blew a rattler up with a M1000 on the fourth. The beer made me do it. Hope all dreams come true!

180+ Typical or a 190+ non-typical or I eat my tag.
A few contenders have recently been found and if I can keep tabs on them or as long as they are on public land my chances are decent. Pray for stable weather.
Good luck to all of you on your dream buck this year.
Best,
Jerry

Stone's sheep - hold out for a very pretty ram with curling horns "greater" than 37-38 inches........ score doesn't matter

Elk - would like to get a 300 bull this fall

Moose - shoot a calf in season

Mule deer - I want a big heavy typical this time around

Whitetails - a 140-150 buck or better in BC .... and a 160 or better buck in Saskatchewan.

Cow Elk with my new Omega for the freezer.

A good buck in Unit 41, I'm just hunting for fun this year, if I get my elk I'll not settle for small.

Looking at giving my mom and dad a hand at getting their bull moose this year. They drew the area that I'm working in all summer. I've seen some whopper bulls in there already this year. Size doesn't really matter though, since they are hunting for meat.
Looking for an immature (spike/fork) bull moose for myself. Seen several of the young tastey critters this year so hopefully I can find one when the season is on. Maybe even while at work, so I have more help loading it in the truck. :)
Will be looking for a nice tastey muley doe in Nov. Was the only draw I got this year. Always nice to have some fresh venison in the freezer.
The rest of the fall I will have to settle chasing big ol' monster muleys. It's getting personal with a several bucks that I have been chasing the last few years. No more dinks like the one I shot last year :) Time to play some real hard ball. I really want WideBugger to hit the dirt this year. All I've had is his tracks the last couple of seasons. He's bound to screw up one day. I plan to be there when he does.

One word: Mature. I don't care about score. The buck I shoot will have a barrel chest, roman nose, and age. If I don't see him I'll have enjoyed the game anyway. I have 2 good deer tags this year to try to find a buck no one shot in the past 4 years.

As for the other species, I am looking for a NonTyp 360-370 bull with my LTD Entry elk tag in Utah. My wife's Utah Mtn Goat will hopefully be around the 10 inch mark. I'll shoot a cow elk, have it cut and wrapped, to give to a friend who has fallen on hard times. That should do it for big game.

Then there is the winter search for the Canvasback Drake that has eluded me for the past 17 years of searching, but that is for a different forum......

300" plus ROOSEVELT BULL(Want to try with bow 1st!)in the Marbles Mt in NOR CA! Then Blackies(big green) 3x4 26" wide (he was their last year and been spotted twice since!). Mule Deer
in my X-1 honey hole is a hit and miss, they most go 24" wide and 26" tall heavy nice racks!(3x4,4x4,4x5 with trash is about the best taken their!).
If any time left I will hunt deer in Utah southern unit!
Last but not lease 80-100 Green Heads!(Throw in 15 sprig, and a handful of SPECKS,and a HONKER hunt or two!).
ITS GOING TO BE A GREAT YEAR GUY FOR ALL OF US!!
GOOD LUCK!

other forum heck: The fog was in and the birds were everywhere. I had hiked into this small lake and was all to myself. I float tubed to the other side in the dark and set up. The first duck in was a pintail drake and I busted him. In seconds a huge canvasback flew in and landed. I don't know where he had come from. I hadn't seen another. The browning Gold came up to my shoulder, the duck exploded, and nothing, my gun mechanism had jammed. I had taken it to a gunsmith for a thorough cleaning, and he had put it together wrong. As I was gathering up my decoys, mallards, pinnies, buffleheads, etc were landing right out there with me. It was insane.... I was sooooooooo PO'd. Just another trophy that outfoxed the predator for another game later. Lessons learned. What did Remington say???"Never take an untested firearm into the field."

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-04 AT 11:01PM (MST)[p]Yep. it's official. I have it bad (an for those of you don't know what "it" is, I apologize, you have yet to live life as I know it).

Garsh dangit (pg-13 for a word that starts with f and ends with K and it isn't firetruck*), I've got the muley fever again!

Lets looks at the symptoms (i.e. purchases) in the last week alone...

1- sent my .270 to get re-blued (matte finish)
2- Nice shinny new set of 10x42 Khales (sooooo sweet)
3- Just bought a lifesize 3-d foam deer target (doesn't everyone need a 3-d course in an urban backyard?? The neighbors are gonna love me!!
Heck, all this side job money will be gone come hunting time if I'm not cured!!! If I spend another minute in the cabela's bargain cave I'm gonna crack!!
I'm off to bed where I will toss and turn, playing back hunting situations over and over again.

My wife has decided on an intervention, time to hide the credit card again.
HELP!!!

While every one is dreaming of the size buck the'll be shooting, I'm still waiting to hear if there is a eastern colo tag or a B.C tag availible with my name on it......Yeeha......

An 80'Pronghorn in West TX in Oct...
A nice 100' coues buck here in AZ in Nov...
A bear hunt this Sept...
And hopefully a nice tom lion in Jan....
and any other dream tag I hope to get From AZFGD(bull elk, sheep)...

and a ton of quail here in AZ and in Cali. in between all those other hunts.

Last year, I had deer licenses in three states. I never fired a shot with either archery or rifle. But I had a great time hunting and also had a fun fall and winter around the house. Shot a ton of priaire dogs, trapped 12 skunks and 4 beavers. And a couple of coyotes along the way.

This year, as always, I'll shoot a 180 class buck, or a buck with mass and trash - and I prefer the latter. I've only got time to muzzleloader hunt in Coloraod for 4-5 days and archery hunt Wyoming for 3 weekends. So I am not overwhelmed with optimism. I'll scout seriously and try hard, but without limited quota licenses for some of the top areas, it can be a struggle.

When we have the fall pool for predicting the big buck killers of 04, better slide me down the list again. The flip side is that a few of our hunters will whack some solid bucks and bulls.

Well since I got a 30" muley on the wall going to do some serious scouting this year for a muzzle tag in unit 2 NM. Have had some reports of s big buck. Got to find him.

Archery Elk in 15 NM. Looking for a decent bull. Would like to see more of the 350 plus that are down there. Maybe chase for a few days. Need some cooler temps and rain. Have the early hunt end of August - 1st week of September.

A wood duck - would be awesome!

Good hunts, good buddies, seeing game, having the excitment of planning all year. Great memories.

Front point of the shoulder where the spinal column takes a dip seems like a pretty good place for a 180 grain Nosler. It worked quite well last year.

I just hope to kill a buck that wouldn't shame me in the eyes of Deerking. Can I be the first to say it in this post?
"You da man!"

Just kiddin' pal!

"I said ONIONS AND LETTUCE ONLY, DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Good thing we weren't at the drive through.

vinihunt,

i hope your right. 38 - 39" would look nice in the livingroom. i was just trying to be conservative and not build my hopes up too high. actually i just can't wait to see new country. to harvest something would just be a bonus.

BS
You'll have to get something above 190 typical for me not be ashamed of you, anything else and you are just wasting lead. Best of luck.

Least they could have done was offer us FREE yogurt!

Goals: 180+ typical muley, 330 bull and 14 inch prairie carp.

ELK--Looking for a 380 bull (until the last 2 days, and then I'll settle for a 350 bull)

DEER--Score doesnt matter.....just looking for a wall hanger. Something that is at least 27" inches wide with some mass or trash...If I dont find a wall hanger, Im not shooting at anything....Ill have enough meat in my freezer from last years cow and this years bull.

PHEASANTS--I'd be happy just to see one this year. Utah's pheasant population is about as good as its deer.

DOVES--Daily limit will suffice me!! :)

Thats about all for me this year.

TUFF

Let's see....
A 30" oryx will do (off the range)
60" alaskan moose
350 caribou
any black bear
300 elk (probably wishful thinking)
any mature javalina
and (if I draw) coues deer bigger than the one last year.

I'm sure not all hunts will be successful, but it's going to be fun trying. :) Good luck to everyone.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-13-04 AT 04:13PM (MST)[p]Man I'm dying, my wife thinks its rediculous and always ask me if I'll ever love her more than I love hunting, as for what I'll be looking for this year:

Deer: anything (decent)3 point or bigger, as it will be my first deer. My fingers are crossed hoping for a good wall hanger to hang in my future new home.

Elk: Any bull area but since my 1st elk last year this year 300 or bigger.

Pheasant: I'm with Tuff I'll be happy if I see one rooster, but I'll be taking my 22-250 so I plan on hitting a couple fox, and coons, but we will see.

Jake

The irony kills me, you guys out in deer country want to shoot ducks and pheasant. Out here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, I spend most of my time in the fall in a blind or on the trail of a flushing Labrador daydreaming about muley and elk action. I guess I take for granted that I can kill almost any kind of duck and all the phesant you could dream of any day of the season. I guess the grass is always greener as they say.

I guess trophies can fly as well!! All's I know is they all taste good over mesquite and a cold breeeewww. Get 'er done!!!
