Early rut, early winter?

Here's a farmers almanac question for you oldtimers. If the bulls are screaming and gathering cows in late august, which seems early to me, does that mean the winter will arrive early? If the cows get bred early the calfs will be born early in May and our hills are snow free usually that time of year. It is exciting to here that the bulls are going at it, I wish I could be out there.

I can't recall a mid-August with-out hearing elk bugle. The bulls are winding up from late July till the peak of the rut when the cows come into 1st estrus, which is usually mid-September.

It snowed along the Colorado - Wyoming border last Thursday!! The temperatures just dropped out of the sky!! The snow was on the tops of the peaks !! I saw it with my own eyes!!

Another thing an old timer told me once is to pay attention to how high the bees put there nests is good way to judge what kind of winter we will have, the nests I see are high, which to this old timer would mean heavy snow fall! Anybody else ever hear anything like this?

Interesting that you bring this up. I was in Salt Lake for a wedding last weekend and saw a large "V" formation of geese flying south. As I looked up my Father in law mentioned that geese flying south that early in the summer was a sign of an early winter. I guess time will tell.

The golf course they were headed for was most likely 'south'. Most geese in Salt Lake never migrate.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-07 AT 12:17PM (MST)[p]I would say most do fly south!!! A few do not!

There are a lot more geese lately, due to agriculture refuges, golfcourses etc, that are not migrating but the percentage is tiny compared to the sum total of geese in North America that do migrate.

I've seen many geese migrating here in my country which is early for them. I'm stoked for the possibility of an early winter as it would greatly improve my particular November deer hunt.

I don't know about snow on the UT/Colo border but with all the hail that came down Friday it sure made the ground look like it had snowed in the North Slope of the Uintas. luckly for me I was in camp when it started..pea, dime and quarter sized pellets that broke vent covers on campers and then made the overnight temps in the mid 30s.
we need the moisture so let it come....

And here I am thinking that this is the hottest driest dang August in my lifetime! Seriously, we haven't even had a frost yet in the mountains around Heber. The elk are so quiet it makes you wonder if they're even around. I'm voting for a hot dry fall and another very light winter. Wish the rut would hurry up!!! Glad I'm not hunting with an LE archery elk tag this year.

Looking forward to some colder temps.

Early winter coming the squirls are gathering like mad men . Saw more rubs this weekend then I have ever seen . No elk except for a few on Fri before the opener. They were buried deep in the black timber all weekend . Moose out the wazoo though!
