Just wondering what everyone does with the ivory's out of the elk they kill. I just have mine in a bag back home and was wondering if there is anything you can do with them.

Had this made for my Mom's B-day present several years back out of a bull I took that year. Ivory and gold. I will make myself some cuffs with my next set.

I just priced getting them gold-capped to wear around my neck. 10ct. cost $257.00 and 14ct. cost $329.00 each.
I decided to get a tonneau for my truck instead...more practical function for the money!!

A lot of people make them into rings which look good.. We've also used them in Belt Buckles or other jewelry.
We've made some shift knobs from antlers and inserted ivorys.

Be creative... and let us know what you come up with...

Here's a little tip to all who save elk ivories-
After you pull them from the animal, place them in some used, wet coffee grounds from the coffee pot and let them sit like that for a few days, it really brings out the gold colors.

I have had this BPOE Pendant for some time now, someday will probably redo it since the Lodge no longer it active.

I got my right incisor knock out playing softball so I had an elk ivory implanted in its place. I talk kinda funny but you should hear me whistle for the dog...:)

I had a ring and a neckless made for my wife out of my one and only elk . Wish I had more elk ivory to worry about what to do with it!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-07 AT 07:35AM (MST)[p]BT, all Elk have the ivories, they are located on the topside of the mouth behind the front group of teeth. I have always cut them out with a knife but recently heard a new easier way is to place a short 2X4 or a stout stick against the ivory and firmly smack it with a hammer, rock or whatever you may have to knock the ivory out.

Guess I should clarify that all Rocky Mountain Elk have ivories but not sure about the other varieties of Elk

Flatlandr has that right...that method works really slick. It helps to make one incision on each side of the tooth and then it usually comes out with one or two whacks. No pliers or you will have a scratched up elk ivory...

Had the pendant custom made and the chain was basic stock that a jeweler normally would carry. $1000, it was a pretty good size chain and the weight on the pendant was noticeable as well.

ROFLMAO!!
I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!

For removal, the gut-hook on the back of some knives, just under the gum line, and twist, pops them right out.
Just my .02.
