I was up in unit 10 this weekend. Saw plenty of bulls but never heard a single bugle. The velvet is rubbed off though. Should start screamin soon. Got a bull tag starting up there in a couple weeks.

Acorn

Acorn did you see some big bulls? I bet your pretty jazzed right now eh???Best of luck....Larry

Shouldn't they be making some noise by now? I'm a little concerned, it seems like the rut isn't starting as soon as it usually does. It's really hot, I know that much. Those hunting in lower elevations are gonna have it rough.

aztrophy,
thats why i posted i am not hearing a peep.late calves???bulls are all rubbed off.hoping the rut is not going to be slow.

I had a few bulls screaming in different parts of the unit. It was a Rim unit.

It's still August. They'll be fine. We're heading down for a muzzy hunt in 22 South at the end of September. I'm sure they'll be going totally nuts by then.

I was in Unit 10 last weekend. Every bull I saw was still in velvet! Biggest was a 6 X 5...

No screaming either..just wait, it's gonna happen!~

Water where I'm looking came way to late to help out. At least they're gonna be fat when they fall!

don,
thanks.i know you and your guys spend 100s of hrs afield.i just remember a few years back when the calves were late and the rut was blah.....we heard bugling in dec in unit 21!! your right unit 8 where i am scouting looks like kentucky......

5bs was quiet as a mouse. Saw plenty of animals and a couple of decent bulls but not a peep yet. Lots of water everywhere.

Just spent four days in 7W. I heard a little bugling the last three mornings, but they were drowned out by the noise of thousands of ATVs. A friend saw five big bulls down low but still bached up - just this morning.

uno,
thanks for the report. i live in 7w and we just stay home and hide in the corner on weekends like this.just kidding the wife and i are heading out to 8 here in a few hours.we hunt during the week and dont see anyone.
thanks again

Just maybe it to hot for them to be screaming yet, need a cold spell to come thru. Then I think they will kick off.

spent a little time in 8, left because of all the people and all the quads and rangers making new roads across every meadow or to every tank up there. went to the multi unit area and had many bugles and saw a big bull with 30 cows. will post pics later

was that nuts in 8 or what?we must have been in the same area.i was wondering where the tree cops were?they could have written a 100 tickets for driving offroad.one group made a "track" around their camp that will never have native grass again.i live im williams and wonder why all the "phoetards" are finding the woods around williams a great place to destroy??the wife and i were fixing an old guzzler tank till dark.silent as a mouse.

Geeze , sounds like unit 8 has hammered by atv riders. You guys should atleast call and report it. They will get tired if so many calls keep coimg in they'll send some smokies up in there. The bulls haven't really started to rutt here in NM, the bigger bulls should start to jockey for position with harems of cows in the next week and figure by mid September the rutt will kick into gear....
