I currently have 6 preference points. I'm hoping to go to Colorado muzzle loader hunting in 2009. I'm wondering if there are some good trophy areas that I could draw with 7 preference points? Does any one know a web site that tells you how many preference points it takes to draw in the different areas?
Thanks

Subscribe to Colorado Outdoors at 1-800-417-8986 and each year in the March issue, it has a complete breakdown on the whole state and by units and animals and the pp needed for both res & NR.
To top it off, a great monthly magazine too.

Both of those methods will work. The Colorado DOW web site also has the raw stats....I think it is called "hunt recap" or MAYBE DRAWING SUMMARY...one of those two. Colorado hunt odds uses this data and makes it alot easier to read and understand.

Go to www.wildlife.state.co.us. This is the Colorado Department of Wildlife website. Under Hunting & Big Game they have a statistics section. Under 2006 the last selection is preference points. That will give you a general idea of how many points it takes for a resident and a nonresident to draw a tag for a specific area.

You have to look at two other selections for the details. Under Drawing Summary they give you the total applications for 1st choice and a res / non res break down of the successful apps.

Under Hunt Recap, they give the total first choice applicants and the number of preference points the applicants applied with. Res and Non Res. Colorado allocates licenses based on the greatest number of preference points giving licenses to the applicants with the greatest number of points. They hold a drawing when applicants outnumber the licenses. ie 100 tags available 50 apps with 6 points, 45 apps with 5 points and 25 apps with 4 points. Drawing with apps with 4 points, all others get a tag. In general, because the res / non res allocation may come into play and change the mix a bit.

Anyway, check out the site and info. No guarantees on how accurate the info is, but it gives you a pretty good idea.

I hunt the southwest corner of CO and GMU 76 is touted as a good muzzle loader unit. I think 7 points will get you a tag, but I am not sure. Might be worth looking into.

Still looking for my trophy bull. I have built 5 AZ points while hunting in CO and I would think my shot at a trophy would be AZ. CO has some nice bulls, but not many on public land where I hunt. Will start applying for a tag instead of the point in AZ next year.

Hope you find a great area and take a great elk.
