Scents and scent elimination

What type of scents or scent elimination do you guys use. You always here people back east hunting whitetails using all kinds of techniques, but what about here in the west with elk and mulies?

Scent elimination is very over rated. There are very few products that work well. The best strategy is to stay down wind, or use natural scents.

It's Bush's fault!!!

Toss them all in the garbage and save your money!

I don't care what you have on, expensive scent locker camo suits or spray scent eliminators, if that wind is at your back your toast no matter what you have on.

I would have to say that their are some small benfits to them but like said above, if the winds at your back you mine as well drive an army tank throught the trees! I personally use "scent killer" rather it works or not I may never know

I'm definately not saying that a scent locker suit doesn't work, i beleive they do....but what about your hair and your breath and whatever else may be slightly exposed?
Like i said previously, i don't care what gadget you use, if you get the wind at your back, your done.

Slamdunk hit it right.

Nothing will cover up a stinkin' humans' scent in the field. Your breath is probably the worst thing of all.

Your only control is to keep the wind in your face. I've had oldtimers swear by wild mint leaves, but who knows?

We are constantly being "sold" all this junk to help us get in close, most all BS. Scent blockers, camo clothing, urine patches.....on and on it goes.

The creatures we chase have millions of nasal receptors, massive ears and eyes the size of tennis balls. Pretty difficult to get past those defenses.

Your only way to success is to avoid sight, scent and sound.....mess any one up and it's game over....I guess there's always luck thrown in.

heheh...I'm going to go against the consensus here and say that last year I had five bulls approach from down wind while I was wearing scent block underwear and three cow elk urine wafers. I've never had that happen before. I'd previously messed with cow elk urine wafers a little but that was the first time I've tried the scent blocks. I don't work for either manufacturer and don't know anyone that does. I was actually facing uphill in a left to right crosswind and the bulls came to me from my right and slightly behind me. All I know is I was successful. Chalk it up to falling bass-ackwards into luck if you like... ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer and still try like hades to respect wind direction, but sometimes the way the wind swirls here in NM, I'd mostly be stalking in a continual circle.

I'm going to experiment a little more with the cow elk urine wafers on this year's muzzleloader. I plan on hanging several in some trees surrounding a cow elk decoy. I'll let you all know the results.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-05-07 AT 08:06AM (MST)[p]I like to dunk those elk urine wafers in my morning coffee.
I'm developing a new line of chewing gum for hunters. Flavors include "doe-in-heat", "cow estrus", & "ruttin' bull". Look for it stores right next to the cough silencer and the deer view mirror. If you can't stomach the gum you can always roll in a fresh cow pattie.

All joking aside, I've got a little piece of gauze pinned to my hat that gets a few drops of elk urine every morning. Can't say that it works, but I like to think so. The folks I work with aren't too happy about it... maybe I should only use it during hunting season?

Way (goner) too funny!

I gave a ride to a bowhunter a couple years ago who was covered in some of that stuff. My Brittany still humps the seat everytime he gets in the truck......and he's nutless!
