So far two bulls have hit the ground over 400 in Utah this year. I know of a couple more that are in the 390's but this post reflects the golden mark. Its amazing to me how many great bulls are in this state. (as well a few other states)

Here is the question,

How many bulls over 400 will Utah produce this year?

Lets post the pics in this thread.

I did not hear about the 2nd, any story or pic's? I would vote to include the 390's to but that is just me! I like to see them all!

The elk hunting in this state truly is nothing short of magnificent these days, and it only seems to get better year after year. Others from neighboring states question how we can have rut hunts and not damage the quality. I wish i had a theory or an answer, but the year end stories and pictures speak for themselves, it just keeps getting better.

Does anyone know the final count of 400" (gross) or better taken last year? I know of 17 that were officially spoken about and three that were kept quiet.
Know i know some people are getting sick of the "Golden 400" that keeps being brought up, but facts are facts are facts, this state alone took around 20, 400 plus giants last year alone! Now toss in what Arizona took along with the onesy twosies from a couple other states and the numbers are incredible!
Too bad i'll never have one of those big bulls, all my points are on deer and i can't afford 20K to go get one for myself :-(

slamdunk,

Even with 20 bulls in Utah over 400, if you draw or buy a tag, you still probably will not get one. With over 2000 tags that is less than 1%. Those who get most of that 1% are those who can afford to buy the services or spend 24/7 scouting their bulls.

I still love the fact that Utah produces these caliber of bulls.

Oh i know ktc, i work for an outfitter resposible for some big arse bulls over the years.
Personally i'd be tickled with something around 370 or better.
400" is a pretty big order by ANYONE'S standards, and to ask for one from ANY outfitter, although not impossible, is a pretty selfish demand.

I have helped kill a bunch of extremely nice bulls, but all i have are the pictures and the memories.
But that's really what it's all about anyway. :)

2nd bull scored 400 5/8 with 5 inches missing. Thats a MossBack guided bull. In fact, AntlerRick might know somthing about it :)

sd,

I guess I wanted to point out the rarity of 400. Some people seem to think they are common here, but they are not. Others seem to think you are someone special if you get one. I think it is a cool benchmark, but lots of great bulls are killed every year no matter what they score. If a hunter asks his outfitter or expects to kill such a great bull when they get their Utah tag, then more than likely they will be disappointed. Sounds like you can see the 400 reality. Maybe I am still a little amped up over that retarded post about ethics?

Mr Browtine, My name is Moosie. I drew a faily easy tag in Utah but can't spend any time scouting. It "seems" like you know a little about Utah bulls. Could you point me in the right direction for a Good bull ? I don't need anything 400"s, jsut a 300 incher I would "settle" on..... :)

My guess is 13 bulls hit the 400" mark.

Moose Nutz,

Sure, I can help you. But you may be disappointed. I can only find bulls bigger then 300 in your unit. :( If your still looking for help, send me a PM :)

I too was a little bent over that ethics post, what a can of worms that thing was...or still is.

400" really is like you said ktc, "a benchmark" and everybody that draws or buys a tag want's or expects one, but your 1% kicks in and not too many people realize that till they get out there and actually look for one.

Personally, i tell a client that if he's going to be happy with a 370" bull on the last day and we happen to see one on the first day....he'd be wise to not gamble.
Trying to find that bull on the last day when we already passed him up is a pretty tough task.

However, i did have a client last year that killed a 384" bull the first morning (we found him the night before) and i told him what i stated above. Long story short....BOOM.

Here's the bad part, two days later while helping other guides and clients, i found a bull that went 396" (without adding approximately 6" of broken points) and it was taken by that other client. All you can say at that point is "sh*t happen's".

But was my guy upset that we didn't hold out....hell no, he beat his only other bull he's killed by 50"!
He has shown his grattitude by booking again, i'll be with him in two weeks to do it all over again.
Still going to be tough, if not impossible to beat a 384" bull, but i know we're going to have a great time trying! :)

Hey Browtine,
As a matter of fact I do know a little about the 2nd 400 inch bull that hit the ground. We all know the hunter, Pat Gilligan, and know that he has taken many great animals, and is a great supporter of Utah hunting. Pat is very selective and will hold out for an exceptional bull, or will not shoot. It is not that he wouldn't be happy with a smaller bull, but has taken many great bulls and it isn't an ego trip with him to just kill a bull.
This bull that Pat harvested this year is a brute. He is a 7X8 non-typical. The bull had the broken point and a short brow, and still broke the 400" mark. He has incredible mass. Pat was very happy with the opportunity to be hunting in Utah and to take such a great bull.
The guide was the same one who located the state record bull last year, and again found an incredible bull for an appreciative hunter.
This 400" post will surely bring out the "guide haters" but some of us who have ties can appreciate their hard work and dedication to their hunters.
Congratulations to Pat on a well deserved bull, and to the guide for finding another Utah monster!!
Just looking forward to what the rifle season brings as far as monster big stinky bulls....
In fact, I think I'll talk this guide into helping with my wife's LE elk hunt this year!!
Wonder what the chance of that would be!!!!
I'll bet I can swing it!!!

Rumor has it that a 422-inch gross, 410 net typical was taken just yesterday.

Would his initials happen to be KL? If so, I have hunted with him and he is one hell of a guy, and guide! I hope to have enough dough when I draw an LE tag (ie. never) to have him guide me on that hunt....

Sounds like we are well on our way here in Utah for the big boys again.Hey Rick, did Pats bull come from the P unit? How bout your wife, is she chasing big stinky on FL this year?

Good luck guys with tags, it's going to be a hell of a ride. Hold on!

Yes and Yes...
And hopefully we can find one of the big "big stinkys"...
There is rumor that the FL may hold a bull pushing 4 this year... I've seen some big ones, and have to agree...
But we'll be very happy with a good quality bull. Where she is handicapped, it will be a lot harder to beat the brush to find the bulls...
But we'll see what happens! I feel good about it, and if I can pull that guide over, all the better!!!!

He killed the bull with the twisted pedestal if I'm not mistaken? I'm not sure the exact gross score of the bull but, I want to say it was like 411 or 407 not sure though!

Hey Dru,
It was that bull. He would have gone 411 or better without the broken tine and the stubby brow.

>Hey Dru,

We tried to kill him last year but, was unable to with the hunters limitations. We ended up killing a bull north from that location with 26 inch thirds. But, that twisted pedestal bull was a wild lookin bull. Pat said he was extremely satisfied with him, so good job!!

Now now, you need to leave that 400 up on Fishlake for me on my Muzzy hunt! You can shoot one that is 380 and I will shoot the 400 :)

I mean Southeast Utah is where the 422 bull came from. No wonder I get lost so much ;)

Anyone seen or heard about the bull near the Ute bull that scores over 400...or should I say way over 400?? Just wondered if the Gov tag holder may have whacked him?

Antlerick PM me if you need any info.

No doubt about it, It is going to be a great year for big bulls. I wouldn't be suprised if a 400" bull came off the FL. There are some great bulls running around down there. I will be on the FL with a relative hunting on the opening of the early rifle hunt. Too bad those I400 guys want to ruin it. FL is one of the unit they want for there little trial slaughter. I hope everyone voices their opposition to I400 in the upcoming RAC meetings.
If its not broke, don't fix it until it is.

I heard of a 410" killed in the KF, Awaiting pictures.

Moosie,

What in the hell is the KF? I know, I am slow and probably missed your sarcasm again.;-)

Well, 2 things.

One, I mixed up my info. It wasn't a 410" bull killed in the KF, it was a 410 shotgun that killed a chicken that was being shipped to KFC. My bad. Really am sorry. All these guys knowing first were things were kilt and all the scores and everyone first to think they know or know who;s watching whos bull or brag I must have typed soemthing by mistake in the mist of all the excitement :) :)

And 2.... I was seeing how long it was gunna be till someone admitted they didn't know something... like a place called KF :) :) Figured it would take almost 24 hours. And it almost did. thanx man, it takes a true man to ask a question on mm.com any more ;)

(funny thing is some people still don't get it ... HAHA !!!

Carry on............

So when you coming down Moose-Knuckles? Hopefully I am long gone first. What I want to know; is, do you have ONE located? A couple? Or, are you winging it? I am winging it.;-) If you were REALLY nice to me, I could show you where a 427 net lives. ;-) Maybe then, you could make the 400 thread?

Tell me cheesedick, what is a KF. I really want to know and I know it is not a KFC. It is ktc to you #####-up website owner!;-)

You staying at bt's? If so, maybe about Tuesday my wife can show you what one looks like? Ha!

People, they thin' I don't know a Buttload of Crap About the Elk, but I do. (ktc)

KTC, You crack me up man !!! truely.

I would make it worth your while for a 400" bull. You know ;) (ATTENTION FISH&GAME COPS, Moosie jsut propositioned someone for help.... Whatever :) )

Seriously though, I have several places. It seems , for as many people as I though I've pissed off over the years here on mm.com, they either got over it, or realized I'm not a Pr|ck. I'm hoping the former, I like the Bad boy rep I have going :)

I'll be scouting Next friday then deciding were I want to go on the opener. there are so many rumours gonig on about 386" here, 402" there that it's tough to decide.

I do need to hurry and make up my mind though. times a tickin'.

Email GPS coords of the 427 to [email protected] .

Moosie,

Glad to make you chuckle. You bring out the best in me. :)

I do not have any GPS coords. I am a lying SOB. I do have some advice though, take a few good leads then hunt some areas you scouted. You will spend your whole hunt chasing phantom bulls if you are not careful. Everyone in Utard "knows where a 400 is." Also, NO WAY, can you hunt the whole unit. Not happening!

Wait for a "Holy Cow!" bull and shoot him. Put the tape on him after if you want. Look at the bull in the Wasatch thread, not 400, but it is an awesome bull. Anyone who passes that beast because it has to be 400 has rocks in their head. That, or they just like to hear their self say 400. I always say 350+! ;-)

I have not been out this year much, been on the DL. Let me know how it goes and have bt call me so I can see him when you are done?

Good luck!
