Just read in the latest issue of Outdoor Life that an Illinois man through his Outfitter at the Utah SFW bid on and got a deer tag for this amount, the highest ever paid.
The prior record was for a Bighorn Sheep tag at $80,000.00

The guide/outfitter was a Lane Torgerson there in Utah, who said that the fellow kept saying, "yes" and he would raise the price.

$81000 to shoot a buck worn down by winter and standing belly deep in snow. Then we'll get to read about what a great hunter he is, what great hunt it was and how this will benifit our deer herds. What a crock! These tags should be done away with all together.

Doesn't the money go back to your wildlife department? Hey, don't get me wrong I agree that it doesn't take much effort to shoot a deer belly deep in snow, but if someone wants to pay $81,000 for 1 deer.....whats wrong with that? (given that the money goes back to your deer herd).

I'm not saying I am for or against it, and I can do the math that raising the price of the deer tags by $1 would raise more money, but what about all the people that will cry "your pricing the average guy out of hunting?" Just curious as to why some folks are so against these types of tags.

Paul,
Or you could get a special designed Esculator to slide out of the back of your truck when drinking and don't have to "jump" out over the side. he he

Conservation groups get 10% of the sale price for marketing the permit, they also get 60% of the sale price for conservation projects, the dwr gets the remaining 30% for projects.

So SFW gets $56700 and the DWR gets the remaining $24300. What is SFW obligated to do with the money it receives? So much for all the BS about the sale of these tags going to help our deer herds. It used to be that our fish and game departments worked out of little one room offices and drove old trucks and were dedicated to actually helping wildlife and we had great deer hunting. Now they've become political offices with dozens of worthless employees who have no idea about wildlife, huge new office buildings and lots of new trucks and their constantly screaming they need more money and our deer herds are declining. Go figure!

Wes, a little information. Sportsmen for Habitat President Byron Bateman yesterday, just finalized the deal for SFH to acquire 440 acres of land at the cost of $500,000 on the east bench of Kamas, the exact property where the governors tag buck was killed last year.

Rather than houses going up and loosing winter range, this land will forever be managed for a place where hundreds of deer and elk winter each year. These animals move back up onto public land, where any general season hunter can hunt them.

So, SFH put up $120,000 conservation permit money, we borrowed $380,000 to finish the deal. WE are on Monster Mulies looking for all the dedicated hunters out there to help finish paying the bill. SFH welcomes any donations. Please send it to SFH, 626 Cottonwood, South Webber, Utah 84404. Byron donated the $30,000 real estate commission back to SFH (actually never took it).

Glad to answer any more questions. IF you want to see where $3.2 Million of the conservation permit monies went over the past two years, you can log onto www.sfwsfh.org and click on the SFW News tab. Some great projects starting to reverese the downward trend as you and all of us want to accomplish.

Don,

Thank you for clearing that up. I was afraid I was going to have to read more "enlightened" comments. :)

I still feel its wrong to sell out for the rich guy. If the DOW needs more money raise everyones tag price a little(figure it out, its pennies on the tag). But no, make it so rich guys once again hunt what they want when they want. Will we ever learn this kind of thing is the root of all evil in hunting?

Now that this crap has been started it's going to be really tough to get rid of it. Even if we raised tag fees it doesn't eliminate the fact that there are idiots out there willing to pay 81,000 more dollars for a "shooting tag", and there are greedy individuals willing to take it! It all comes down to this. In order to eliminate this and change the way our mule deer are being managed. A group of average hunters (which are the majority by far)are going to have to stand up and say enough is enough and put some pressure on the DWR to change it. We need go back to giving everyone equal opportunity to hunt and stop this class seperation nonsense. The average hunter is being slowly stamped out. As long as we sit back and do nothing, there are those obviously out there willing to take advantage. How long are we going to sit back and take it?

Good post 30". I have lived in UT all my life and it burns me to think someone can lay down a wad of cash and go shoot at our deer on the winter range.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-04 AT 08:38PM (MST)[p]well, if you live and hunt UT, go to the meetings and voice this! Tell them you are sick of the rich getting opportunities to hunt when no one else can. Tell them you will pay a buck more for your tag if they are so hard up for cash. Take back what was always yours and your grandpas hunting rights. Public land is for the public, not the rich.
You know, heres something the DOW should do in all states. They should make it MANDITORY to fill out a questioneer when they apply for the big game tags in the spring. This is all done by PC these days and an electronic poll can be easily added to ask what the hunters want to see for issuies like this, and tag allotments, hunt seasons, ect. If any of you work for the DOW bring this up unless you really dont care about the publics input.
