Well, if we're going to debate something, let's debate something that can help me with my next purchase. I want your oppinions on the 7mm wsm. In looking at the ballistics tables on federal's website, this little number looks pretty impressive. A 160 grain Nosler carries more energy and shoots flatter than a 165 grain out of a 300 win mag. And the velocities and trajectory of the 140 and 150 grainers would be deadly on muleys. And it does outperform the 7 Rem mag as well. What are your thoughts on this round and short mags in general?

Are shortmags here to stay? I heard early on that the 7 WSM was the step child of the Shortmags when they first came out, but it sure seems like there are more and more rifles being chambered for them. Anyone with the shortmags, how is the recoil? Let me know what you think. This gun would be used for muleys and the occasional elk.

thanks for your input,

WH

I own the winchester coyote, I don't care for the feel of the stock but it has the med bull barrel, but other then that it works well for me, I too was empressed by the ballistics as well...

I Just got it last season so I haven't taken anything with it yet, I mostly like the short action because I've had the long action for years and the scope just never fit right (not comfortable) to look through, well thats cured now, the other thing that one needs to get used to is when loading the magazine the casings are fatter so they teter a little when pushing down, but it loads (jacks) smothly, I'm keeping mine.....

About 8 months ago I was in the same dilema and after all the research I compiled I went with the .300 WSM. You can't hardly go wrong with either of them--just a new gun in general! A friend of mine bought the 270 short and it kicks like a mule compared to my 300 short. The 7MM kicks harder than the 300 short too so I have to assume that the 7MM short has some major recoil.

I forgot to mention that they do kick, but no more than an LA mag, so I put a sims limb saver on it and it tamed the beast real good......

WH,
Last year I purchased a 300 WSM Browing A Bolt Stalker and used it quite successfully on a Utah deer hunt. The accuracy of the rifle is impressive although the recoil from a bench rest may require the use of some form of padding. I use a small sand bag for my shoulder. Very satisfied with the rifle and knock down power. thanks

A ballistic nut friend of mine just got a 7mm rem ultra mag. this will out perform all calibers listed above (especially at longer ranges and with handloads). Look into it. He got the Remington 700 LSS model, very nice\

Go with the 300 WSM I have one in a model 70 and it dont kick any harder then a 270 or 30-06. Accuracy is great and flat puts-em down. If the 300 is not your style get the 270 WSM.
