LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-07 AT 11:48AM (MST)[p]whats the best to do when they ain't talkin...?

gettin no response to a bull call or cow call...

frustrating cause i see fresh tracks everywhere...any sugestions...I've heard oregon elk don't talk much could it be true.....

i had a buddy hunt the uintahs here in utah 2 weeks ago. hiked in quite a ways and bugled once. raked the crap out of a little tree, tore up the ground and ended it with a few chuckels and one cow call. he said it was 10 minutes that a bull came in, silent as ever. never called never made a noise, just the noise of hitting the ground after my friend arrowed him.

Shed antler works great for that tree raking and ground tearing. Rattle two together if you've got 'em...

does it make 'em answer?

Don't over call, especially with that bugle. Only use that bugle maybe once for a locater. If no response put it away. The bulls are around and they can hear you, they must have been called to too much. They are interested, it's that time of year, so try different things. Move into an area that looks great, far away from roads and traffic. Then do the tree raking. Remember if you've got an old shed antler that works the best, if not use another branch. Rub the crap out of a little pine, only a 6 to 10 footer, then stop every couple of minutes and listen and keep a watch out. I've had bulls answer to this tactic. If they respond first, then go ahead and call back. If no response to the tree raking go back to it again, but don't call unless called to. Keep a good eye out, they will come in just quietly and usually circle you at about 100 yards or so to get down wind.
Good luck

i agree with tdoman. get away from the roads, watch the wind. bugle once. the only thing i would do different is i'd rake a little aspen. find a good stick or a dead branch and beat the crap out of the tree raking and stabbing and demolishing. then, check the wind and hang tight.

Deserteagle has got a good point, small aspen are also wonderful to beat up on. I've seen elk tear up either tree, just pick a smaller one, it seems to work better.

the only reason i rake aspens is cuz its easier. i'm one of those half and half hunters. lol.
