elk rut and weather

Can anyone cite a peer reviewed study that show's a connection between elk rutting activity and the weather?

Yep; last year it snowed on an archery hunt that I was on with a friend (peer). I stated that the bulls were more fired up the next morning. He reviewed my statement and agreed, as we finished gutting the second bull of the morning.....

I need a scientifically based article on the subject if such a thing has been studied. Observation like the one you mention are cited all the time, in fact it's one of the reasons I'm interested in learning more about it. I have seen many times that elk change their rutting behavior during a weather change, I'm just not sure if it's the weather or something else. . .

I'd really like a citation to a peer reviewed, professional article or journal publication that makes a conclusive link between weather and the estrus cycle of elk; if anyone knows of any would you mind posting them here . . .

Thanks again. . .

interesting topic, I would think that "behavior" may change but the rut it self probably doesn't vary all that much, as in cows still get bred even thuogh we may not hear bulls bugling their brains out at the exact same time. A good study from a grad student thesis, or a paper by a state bio might shed some light on it.

DO YOU BELIEVE MOTHER NATURE TAKES CARE OF THINGS???

OR ARE YOU GONNA NEED A NOTE FROM GOD SAYING ITS SO???

Contrary to what some may beleive, it's not the weather that get's the rut going, it's the same thing that turns the leaves on the tree's orange...."the length of the days".
All the weather really does is dictate how active they will be.
When it's hot and dry, they are less active, when a cold snap kicks in, they'll be out playing all day.
I prefer the cold snap hunting myself...last week was a really tough hunt in the heat.

Slamdunk is right about the length of days. But the change of weather is good for us hunters. Cooler crisp air feels like hunting weather. Good for our souls. Hunting is an ancient calling and I pity men who don't experience it.

You boneheads, I need the citation for a research project, not for an education, manny and bobcat, dont piss yourselves. . .

I've been an avid elk hunter most of my life. Shot a few MONSTERS too. I believe I understand, for the most part, elk and their habits.

What I'm looking for is a scientific study, a peer reviewed article that confirms that weather either does or does not affect estrus and therefore the rut.

If anyone knows of any conclusive studies, I'd like the citation. I share most of your experences, and spend a LOT of time every year, with elk during the rut so I mostly understand their habits (I also understand very well that once you think you have elk figured out, you find that you still have a lot to learn) but im interested in the research on the subject. . . If anyone knows of any, let me know.

Again, I have heard all the storys, read ALL the best books on elk and elk hunting, and grew up hunting them, heard all the weather stories, experenced most of them from hot to cold to rain to sleet, you name it, I've seen elk once bugle hard but now clam up to to I think over calling, and so on, what I am looking for is some real research on the subject. Everyone talks about it, everyone has their own idea, and every one can say boo about it, but lest see the research. . .

Thanks again,

Geeeez, sorry T, guess i failed to really understand what you were after in your question.
I'd imagine you have already tried to Google it, so i guess i can't be of any help.....my bad.

Here is your peer study. It is being reported at MM.

Days get shorter, air becomes crisper.

Bulls become romantic. (want to mate)

Cows become receptive. (Estrus)

Bulls and cows procreate. (No explanation needed)

Life continues on.

T, go over to www.coueswhitetail.com Amanda is the owner of the website and a biologist. She can direct you or email you a study if she is aware of one and there is a biologist who frequents that site who wrote a book called "Deer of the Southwest" Jim Heffelfinger who I am sure can get you some info. Hope this help........ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I've looked for the same info. (scientific studies) on this topic. Found nothing and I have talked with numerous biologists. Thought I'd let you know.

HEY T-Final!!!

YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A JACK-ASS ABOUT IT!!!

THERE ARE MORE VARIABLES THAN ANYBODY CAN LIST!!!

LETS SAY YOU FIND YOUR CITATION!!!

SO WHO THE HELL SAYS THE STUDY IS 100% GOSPEL???

HERES ONE FOR YOU TO THINK ABOUT!!!

LISTEN & LISTEN GOOD!!!

IF YOU ONLY RUTTED ONCE A DAMN YEAR YOU'D BE DOING SOME PRETTY DAMN STUPID $HIT TOO!!!

DID ANYBODY MENTION THAT IN THE STUDY???

I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!!!
