LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-07 AT 10:41AM (MST)[p]Appartently you aren't familiar with CWMU's or landowner tags.
I work on 3 CWMU's right now for both deer & elk.
The state issues tags according to land size and the animals that inhabit it and i can assure you the tag numbers are low.
Have you ever investigated any CWMU units and see what the quality of the animals are...obviously not.
Ever wonder why the Northern Unit bounced back so good on deer after the long drought? You can thank the all private lands for that one. Take the Ensign ranches for instance. there is over 50,000 acres of land and aproximately 20 tags are allocated for use. There's not one piece of realestate in this entire state that produces more 200" bucks than that place!!
If it were an open area, there wouldn't be a freakin thing on it but a bunch of forkhorns.

.......and then we can talk about the Deseret Land & Livestock ranch if you'd like some elk numbers.
Aproximately 5000 head of elk, a 1-1 bull to cow ratio about 100 bull tags......and a 350 average on their trophy bulls?
Sounds pretty shot out to me!!
Damn private lands...i hate 'em!! :)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-07 AT 12:21PM (MST)[p]I didn't say anything about CWMU's....I went in and changed the question for you....no more bad mouthing landowner tags........

That's what private landowner tags are.
They are tags allocated by the state for private landowners within a specific hunting unit, each region is full of them and they are all pretty dang good hunting if you either buy one or draw one.

There ya go utahelk, that's the drawback of the landowner tags....Unless of course it's your grandpa that owns all that ground and he gives you an early x-mas present!!

If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a catch ;-)

Since I am still learning all of these different tags in UT, I have a question I hope you can answer.

Are there landowner tags AND CWMU tags? Or are they the same thing in UT.

I know in Nebraska, a landowner can get an elk tag every three years if he has over a certain amount of acres. He can then use that tag and hunt the entire area, not just his acreage. I don't think that is fair at all.

As for the CWMU's, I think they work - for what I know to this point. I have looked at them, but like I said, I am still figuring out this mess.
