I just got back Sat. from over a week straight out there. I spent every weekend from July 7th, to the night before archery opening out there scouting. I saw tons of bulls, with maybe half a dozen going over 350. I was in my honey-hole on opening with bulls bugling all around me, feeling confident that this was it..... then a melon-head from Montana rode his four wheeler right through the middle of the elk, and stopped and cow called a few times. Since then the hunting has sucked. Very little bugling, on the Wyo. side anyway, and only small ones have stuck around. I haven't seen a single cow (on the Wyo. side), and figure the bulls that want to breed have gone to where the cows are. (Colorado)
Depending on where you were in the unit, I could almost assure you about who was on the four-wheelers...... they've been there the entire month, and will stay until they get a 350 bull.....
To say the very least, I am not impressed with their "hunting style", and if I see anyone chasing animals with a 4-wheeler, I'll turn their butts in!!
Anyway, yes in the past there were some good elk, rifle season will move them around more, but from what I've heard, you don't want to be anywhere close for at least the first week.
Good luck to ya'
