LAST YAER WAS IN COLORADO FOR MY FIRST TIME.IWAS IMPRESSED I DONT KNOW WHY IDIDNT DO THIS TEN YEARS AGO I WAS IN AREA 28,SHOT A 26"6 X 6 MY FIRST MULEY.THERE WAS NO SNOW 50-60DEGREES DREW A TAG THIS YEAR FOR SAME AREA 4TH SEASON NOV 6-10 WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? 3FT OF SNOW NO MULEYS OR 3FT & 30"S RUNNING EVERY WHERE [JUST KIDDING] IWAS BETWEEN KREMLIN & GRANBY DOES THIS AREA PRODUCE DECENT BUCKS? or what COULD the weather be this time of YEAR,WOULD APPRECIATE ANYBODYS OPINION

Should produce good bucks, but the cold and snow will be a big factor. I hunted the fourth season about five years ago and it was 30 below and there was 3 feet of snow. Didn't see a living thing including birds, squirrels, etc.

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY,THE GROUP THAT I WENT WITH LAST YEAR SAID THEY HAVE NEVER NOT DRAWN A TAG FOR 3RD SEASON, THIS YEAR GOING THE 4TH SEASON 2 OUT OF 5 DID NOT DRAW ANY REASON WHY THAT MIGHT BE? IT IS PRIVATE LAND ALSO HOW VAST IS A MULEYS HOME RANGE? HOW FAR CAN OR WILL THEY TRAVEL

Muleys don't go very far if they aren't pressured. Maybe a few square miles.

75% of 1st choice applicants drew a 4th rifle season for 18,28,37,371 this year. Some of those folks had points some (like me) did not. If you look at the drawing results for this year compared to last year they more than doubled the # of buck tags for 4th rifle. I thought I would not draw because there was 205 tags last year and 500 this year. I was a little pissed when I drew because I really wanted a point. Oh well. When I hunted that area for a cow 2 years ago during 4th we got hit with snow and all I saw were deer (including some good bucks) so I;ll be back in a few months(!) to chase 1 of them.

cohntr6, I left you a post in the archery section last week and havent heard back from you. Sorry i didnt get ahold of you while you were in Columbus. I am dealing with a very sick father and have been driving to Cleveland quite a bit. Email me at [email protected]

cohntr6,

Interesting info! I was talking to the terrestrial biologist that covers this area the other day. I draw the 3rd season tag for the Middle Park area every year but have consider the 4th... although I don't want the PP, I want the tag (!), and knew I didn't stand a chance based up on the draw stats for the past 5 yrs. When are the # of tags for the year determined and is this info available prior to the submission deadline? That info would be invaluable in terms of determining how your app gets filled out each year!

ammot23,

Based on the info I have been able to gather over the past several years, Middle Park certainly holds big bucks, but a big buck is considered a 'gross 180', netting out of the book. Certainly not the potential for the 'booners' coming out of Eagle County and the other proven big buck counties/GMUs. W/ that said, there was a monster that hit the book in 2002 from this area.

Cogriz,
Did you draw 4th season in Middle park? As far as I know you have to refer to last years tag numbers to make your decision by April. Maybe there is another way of finding out. When you spoke with Andy holland did you ask him this question? I should ask the biologist for Fort Collins area. I do know tag numbers are determined usually in feb/march when harvest figures come in and any winter/mortality population counts take place. You are right I would like that info prior to the April deadline.

YOU NEVER CAN TELL WHAT THE WEATHER IN COLORADO WILL BE LIKE. T MAY BE 50-60 DEGREES ONE DAY AND 0 DEGREES WITH 2 FT OF SNOW THE NEXT MORNING. AS FAR AS MULE DEER'S RANGE IS CONCERNED YOU CAN ASK ANY BIOLOGIST IN COLORADO THAT MULE DEER USUALLY HAVE A ROAMING TERRITORY OF LESS THAN A COUPLE MILES BUT CAN MOVE UP TO 70 MILES TO GET TO A GOOD WINTERING AREA. IF THE SNOW FLIES THE DEER WILL HEAD TO THE LOWEST GROUND THEY CAN FIND. MULEYS ARE USUALLY REALLY STARTING TO RUT ABOUT THAT TIME SO FOLLOW THE LADIES, BECAUSE THE BUCKS ARE NOT TOO FAR AWAY. THE BIGGER BUCKS USUALLY HANG ON THE FRINGE AND AREN'T OVERLY AGGRESSIVE TO CHASE DOES UNTIL THE GUN SEASONS ARE OVER, BUT THEY'LL BE AROUND. SOME NICE DEER HANG AROUND THAT AREA, YOU MIGHT EXPECT A 150 UP TO 180 CLASS DEER BUT PROBABLY NOT MUCH MORE.

cohntr6,

Nope... 3rd season. BUT if I had known the # of 4th season tags had been doubled prior to the application deadline, that is likely the direction I would have gone. I didn't ask Andy this question but might the next time I talk to him.

COGriz,
As far as I remember correctly, the tag numbers are not set until after the application deadline.
