Ok, I'm looking into getting a spotting scope. I can't afford something too expensive. But I am looking at a Nikon RAII 20x-60mm. I believe it's the Sky and Earth model. I can get it for about $130. But what I really want to know is; How important are your spotting scopes to you? Thanks.

buy it! thats a good price!
as far as how important I use my bino's and rifle scope more!
What I do mostly is slithering(still hunting?)where I will walk thru black timber(bedding areas) as soundless as possible! not
much open areas.

I HAVE A BAUSCH & LAUMB ELITE SPOTTING SCOPE AND I USE IT OFTEN BUT JUST TO GET A CLOSER LOOK AT A BUCK TO FIELD JUDGE HIM. FOR FIELD JUDGING ITS A MUST BUT FOR SPOTTING YOU CAN DO WITHOUT IT THEY ARE HARD TO SPOT GAME, WITH SUCH A SMALL FIELD OF VIEW BUT YOU SHOULD BUY THAT SCOPE ITS A HECK OF A DEAL.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-14-04 AT 09:38PM (MST)[p]scouting its priceless in july and augest i have more hours on it than my t.v.
once i start hunting i use my binos more only because i know which buck or bull i'm looking for by then

Michael: In my opinion a spotter is best used by someone who is field judging and needs a close and personal look at the antlers. I do just fine with my 15X bino's on a tripod. I think it is alot easier on your eyes and you can see better looking through both eyes than only one with a spotter. The spotter is nice to have but not a necessity to me........... Allen Taylor......

Thanks guys!! It really helps! However, if I do decide to buy it, (I probably will) I won't be able to return it. It's used, but hasn't been used. (The guy bought it, but never used it)

Also, what kind of tripod should I get if I decide to get it?

Michael,
For a lightweight, versatile tripod, in my opinion, the Slik Sprint Pro is the best value out there right now. It weighs under 2 lbs, including the ball head, folds small enough to fit INTO a pack (19"), has legs that can be adjusted to different angles, and is even tall enough to stand behind if need be, and costs about $80. You may want to upgrade the head someday, but this is a pretty good package.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

The spotting scope is one of my most important pieces of equipment that I own for hunting.

After carefully glassing an area with my binoculars ...... whether I see animals or not .... I will usualy pull out the spotter and pick apart in closer detail the area I just glassed to make sure I did not over look any bedded animals that I might not otherwise see with the binos.

I have found more than one trophy big game animal with my spotting scope.

I will also use it to field judge animals I have already spotted by having a closer look.

BCbucks, thanks for the info. That's really encouraging!
