Colorado Units 72/73 3rd Season Advice

Been lurking here for a while and it's definately fun to be around a bunch of deer hunting junkies. Been hunting Sitka Blacktails for about 25 years in my home state of Alaska. Always felt Muleys were Blacktails on steriods - lots of steriods.

Anyhoo, I managed to draw a tag for the 3rd season (Oct 30 - Nov 5) in Units 72/73 in S.W. Colorado. This is near Cortez and Mancos, jsut west of Durango. I know these are not necessarily the best units for trophies, but I drew a tag as a 3rd choice hunt with 2 preference points and I want to give it a shot. This is essentially all of Montezuma county and some of Delores county. Been doing as much "remote" scouting as I possibly can - have images off TerraServer, have the DeLorme Colorado Atlas (gives a fair idea of public land boundries) and have the USGS topos on CD.

Any suggestions on specific/generic hunt areas would be appreciated. Obviously, this is a DYI hunt from a vehicle, but I plan on hunting areas where I can get away from roads & 4-wheelers. Gonna take my Ruger #1 (.30 Gibbs wildcat) or my kids Ruger MK-II .308 compact. I will take my daypack along with a collapsible frame pack. Used to travel pretty light, but the older I get, the more sh*t I seem to "need." You guys definately tend to set my expections too high, especially with all the photos I see here. I would probably settle for a nice 26" wide 4x4. Definately willing to go home empty handed if I don't see anything worth it.

I also have a couple of questions on Colorado game regs (Yes - I did read thru them first.) In Alaska, you have to salvage all edible meat - ribs are considered salvagable. Don't see this specifically mentioned in the CO regs. Also, nothing is said about bringing back all meat before the antlers. In Alaska, you have to pack all meat out before the Antlers. This in not specifically addressed. I'm figuring two trips out if I shoot a buck over 200#s on the hoof.

Shoot me a PM with your email address. I'll be away for most of the next month, but I will be glad to give you my $.02. I have a second season tag here (I live near Cortez), and hope to make it ot for a least a few days.

As for Colorado regs, you don't have to pack the meat first, although you do have that wierd "evidence of sex attached" rule to deal with. You are right; in the regs the rib meat is not discussed. Do what's right. You could always split them like they do in AK.;-)
