Theres some property that I will be able to hunt next year that shares the border with Utah. This is in southwestern colorado and I know there are some big bulls there. I have seen them. I want to hunt there next year with my bow and was wondering what would be the best way to hunt it. This is very thick Pinon/ Juniper. There is also farmland on these properties. Whats the best way? Should I sit on water holes the first part of the season and then try and call them in later in the season since there are very few cows in this area. What would you do?

COarcher,

One good tactic that has worked good for me is to find places were the elk cross fences going too and from the farm land or water holes. They will habitually use the the same crossings once they get the wires pushed down or broken.
Just set up on the down wind side of the crossings and wait.
I killed a 320 8x7 bull two weeks ago usings this tactic!

Hunting p/j isn't really any harder than anywhere else, just different. They more than likely will be feeding in the agriculture, so figure out where to intercept them. Water is a good bet if it's hot and located close to cover. The elk will most likely bed on little flats and north facing ridges so look at a map, highlight those areas, and look for natural corridors leading to the agriculture. Also, look for small clearings and parks inside the p/j, close to the bedding areas. These are the areas bulls will hang out before they start following the cows. It's a different way to hunt elk, but can be a very rewarding experience, good luck.
