LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-07 AT 05:33PM (MST)[p]Well, finally seen a pic of the mossback bull, straight off of the boone and crockett website. This picture really doesnt show off the bull to well though, to bad there wasnt a side view.

37 Feet of Antler
October 2, 2007
Jimmy Ryan was hunting with Doyle Moss and Mossback Guides and Outfitters when he finally came within bow range of this giant bull during Utah's 2007 elk season.
This trophy bull has been unofficially green scored at 427 as a non-typical (443 total gross score). Should that score be near the final official score, it would likely become the new state record, as well as in the top 25 of all time.
It is also one of the largest elk ever taken with archery equipment. Congratulations to the lucky hunter!

If I ran dogs and caught a lion and then called the hunter to come in it would be illegal and called a caged hunt. My buddy hunted this bull saw him twice then doyle and 34 people moved in found the bull then the hunter comes in and kills it. About the same as a caged hunt. my buddy found salt rolled oats and corn by a spring that this bull was hanging by. Don't know who put it there but my opinion is the trophy isn't that great of a trophy with that kind of help. (Radios ,four wheelers the private land that we heard was rented)I would much rather diy than buy my trophy.

34 guys to take one bull....how do you figure.

I only see EIGHT. lol......

Beautiful animal, but I here ya

I can't say that I am too impressed by all this hubbub going on down there is Utah. Matter of fact, it sounds like a joke. With all the bounties, stories of guys "camped" on a bull, those elk have no hiding cover, water looks scarce, blasting them with rifles while they are bugling, what else, it goes on and on. Whatever, that is on me and my own personal feelings, but I do get tired of all the same accusations and no proof. I wouldn't know this Doyle guy if I ran into him on the street, but I still don't think you should talk this much smack about him without proof. Seems everyone has a camera, video camera, camera man, camera crew, yet nobody ever produces any proof of this guys supposed activities. It was public land correct? Was the guy that shot it the only one allowed to hunt in the area. 34 people!!! Should have one camera in the county. We have heard there were 10 guys herding the bull, 15 guys, it was chased off private land, chased with ATVs, spotted by helicopter, and its always someone's buddy, or friend of a friend.
What's the deal?

drathaar,

Did your buddy call anyone or take pictures of the cattle feed bait? IF it is true that would be disturbing, if not, you should probably not say this stuff. I think the burden is on you to be able to back that one up. I know a lot of what you hear about the guides is rumor. I don't know about all of it, but many I have heard I am pretty sure they are false.

Don't pool all of us into the same category as people who cheat. Utah has some great elk and great elk hunting. I am all DIY and would not have it any other way. We do not get the best bulls, but we have got some pretty good ones. Most people get their tag, scout, study, ask around, and give it hell just like any other DIY hunt. You just hear more about the top end guided hunts. I do not care what the guides and outfitters do as long as they leave me alone. 3 years straight and I have not even seen one.

UMMMMMM, HELLO!!!!

It isn't my buddy that said that smart guy. Did you read my post!!! I said I am tired of all the accusations, I am not the one making them. Christ almighty!!!

drathaar, good post(the first one). With all the 'ethical' hunters out there, one would think some EVIDENCE would have popped up on all these lamea$$ accusations, which have gone well beyond absurd.

Please explain how an archer can shot such out of a treestand when it has been 'herded' by atv's and helicopters? He shot it out of a treestand located at a waterhole, I suppose MOssback dug the hole in the ground, hauled in water to fill it, chased the bull for days to get him all thirsty, removed all other water sources, thus 'forcing' this bull to come into the exact spot where the hunter could get a shot, right? How did your 'buddy' come up with 34 as the number to throw out, what a freakin joke. How do you "rent private land"?

Funny KTC, while I was down on the very unit you were, I never ran into you either, yet I had locals tell me the Mossback 'goons' were everywhere and chasing all the big bulls off from the 'average joe' hunters. I had one 'expert' of the mountain tell me(w/o knowing who I was) that Mossback had atLEAST a dozen guides on the unit, even though at the time I was the ONLY one on the unit. WTF?

All these accusations are irresponsible and are what puts hunting in a bad light, NOT the outfitter/guide/finder fee NON-ISSUE! Like the old Wendy's ad said, "where's the PROOF?" If you have none, you ought be mature, and MAN enough to not act like magpies, and not be old gossip nannys. How pathetic!

Why is using a dozen 'buddies' deemed DIY, while using one or two guides deemed 'buying' you trophy? I don't get it. With NO slight intended toward KTC, he and his family have had a tag for three years running on the same unit I guide on, he has a good friend who had guided on this unit in the past who helped out, so I ask, why is how he hunted more DYI(more honorable) than the hunter I guided(with a grand total of THREE people along) on the archery hunt where we hunted for 10 straight days before connecting on a good bull? What am I missing?
