Unit 73

Just curious what the deal is with this unit? It only has a 5 day rifle season and no permit hunts, + a bow season? Are there no animals or what? With a 5 day rifle season is seems like there should be pretty good survival.

I was just scanning the regs looking for anything out of the ordinary, and that struck me that way!

I'm guessing that you are talking about unit 73 in Idaho.
The F&G have been trying to increase the buck to doe ratio in that area for years. There has been a problem with the buck/doe ratio in that unit for at least 10 years. Last winter I think the F&G counted about 6 or 7 bucks per 100 does. The regs in this unit change every other year because the F&G can't decide how to manage it. It has been 2pt only, 2pt for most of the season with a 3-5 days of any buck hunting and is now 4 point only. Personally I like the 4 point only rule but I don't think the F&G will keep the 4 point rule for more than a couple of years.

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!

This unit also is mostly private land and the land owners have gotten togeather and formed the westside alliance and won't give permission to hunt. They were fed up with the F & G and closed off what used to be lots of public access and use to let hunters go on their land but no more.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, thats where I was talking about. Is there any public access then??

Yes, there is public access to unit 73. Get a good BLM map that shows public and private ground and you should easily find the access areas.

There is however a bunch of prime ground locked up as noted above. Sometimes, if you can hack it you can still get behind the private ground and hunt the public stuff but that means no downhill drags out. And it also means that where there is public access there can be a bunch of people (the unit is close to Pocatello).

As noted above, the Fun and Games.....I mean the fish and game doesn't seem to know how they want to manage the area. With the 4 point only rule this year the pressure will again be different..some people like the rule others don't.

Have fun, good hunting.
