I'll be elk hunting unit 34. Have a deer tag also. Any info on the general size of bucks there? I know there's always the possibility of shooting a slammer just about anywhere, but should I hold out or take the first decent buck (even a "camp meat" buck) if the shot presents itself?

I think you pretty much answered you question.
34 is not widely recognized as a big deer area. Having said that there are certainly some good mature bucks in that area.
Only you can decide if you want to hold out and take a chance on not taking a buck or if you want to take the first representative buck you see..
Good luck on your hunt!

I know this is an old thread, but I can't find a lot of current info on Unit 34, so i figured I would keep it going with my update.
I drew a non-res deer tag for for 34 and my buddy got a non-res Sawtooth elk tag. We hunted opening week for both (there 2 nearly weeks). We saw 2 does and fawn. My buddy did jump a nice bull, but no shot. The only elk we saw.
We did see 1 elk in the back of a truck and a wolf in the back of another, no deer hanging in camps, very few gunshots. We heard wolves howling almost every day. My opinion, anyone hunting the area should consider a wolf as their trophy. I was very disappointed with my hunt and hope others had better luck.
And yes, we hiked our butts off to the highest peaks and as far away from roads as we could.
Hope this sheds a little more for the unit.

So you asking a question? Making a statement or just writing down an experience?
What are you getting at??

Just making a statement of my recent experience this season. Didn't realize it would make you upset. My apologies, thought it was obvious.
