High Country Scouting Pics

Some Pics of my scouting trip this weekend. We started hiking at 5 AM, thinking that we'd get to where we wanted to be in about 1 1/2 hours. Four hours later, and we weren't there yet. It took us 4 1/2 hours to reach the summit, and get above treeline. But it was worth it. It was pretty sunny, so we didn't see any bucks, just a doe at the beggining of the hike, going back up from water, and a doe as pictured. If you look at the first pic, at the bottom, you can see a ridge line. That's were we started hiking from. Enjoy! Sorry for the poor pics, but whenever I host them, they always turn out blurry on the URL links.

Here's where we are going to be camping. That's a stream in front of you.

Here's a doe. I just glassed the area, and I look back 10 seconds later, and boom, she had us pegged, but stood there for about 10 minutes just try to figure out what we were. We were on a hillside, and downwind.

Here's a Fischer (sp?), we saw on the way back. Little tyke, but he was right off the trail watching us. I didn't have the shutter speed up high enough, so it turned out blurry.

Thanks for the awesome pictures, looks like great country to be hunting in! Are you in Colorado? Sorry but its a american marten also known as a pine Marten. Fishers are bigger and dont have the orangish throat patch. Still I have yet to see one in the wild! What and when are you hunting?

Great pics, I like the look of that area - you all should have a good time. Especially like the picture of the marten.

Funny how you can underestimate how long it will take you to get from point A to Point B. It happens to me fairly often. Great looking country and nice pics also. Looks like Idaho to me. Am I right?

Nice pictures! Can I please go hunting with you there!

At high altitude ultraviolet rays are stronger and tend to washout pictures -- particularly blue skies. Using a polarizing filter (rotate the filter 90 to 180 degrees in one direction until you notice an orientation that maximizes the "darkness" of the image and take your picture) can help make keep those dark blues dark blue. This may be more of an issue than any blurriness. Just an idea, and maybe you already know about this.

Just joking about begging into your hunt. Nice area though, that's for sure.

Your a good man to share those pics with us. Some of only get to dream of hunting such places. Well Done!

Very nice views! Thanks. Way better than an oak lined soybean field. Thats the kind of place a good spotting scope is worth its weight in gold. I bet you'd see something to get the old ticker going closer to sunup or sundown with some looking up there, for sure. Good luck on your hunt.

MichaelJ....does look like your in the right area. Thanks for sharing the pics. I'm going up that way this weekend. Only little over 2 weeks to go. Remember don't forget your bear tag, my uncle hiked up this last weekend and saw 6, only had the oppurtunity at 2 and they were too small. It's not easy packin' one of those things out of there, it's better to make it worth it. Good luck up there.

Ridgerunner....you heading up there again this year?

Great pics, what state are we looking at. I've seen simular haunts in Kalifornia. Looks like your on to something, hope you get into them. Thanks for sharing.

nice pics, MJ...that is a 'pine marten'..looks like you're close to here..alpine lakes wilderness? like they told you, don't leave home without your bear tag...thanks for sharing...

Thanks for the compliments guys! It's actually WA state. A high hunt area. I wasn't 100% sure about the Martin, but I'm sure you guys are right. He was sure cute, and being 10 ft. away from him was great! Yeah, I hope it produces something (for those who don't know, we're hunting deer). Even if it doesn't, we'll have a great time! That country is soo awesome that taking an animal is only a bonus. I know now what some others meant by saying that on a different post. It was our first time in the area, and we really like the look of it. Lots of places for deer to bed, and lots of GREEN grass.

As for my bear tag. We saw ZERO sign as far as bears go. We both had our bear tags, and my dad was carrying his rifle.

We are going to hike in the day before, camp out, then hunt for 2 1/2 days before going home. I hope it's enough time. Thanks again guys.

They may be cute (Pine Martins), but what a pain in the a$$!

I was on a 9 day elk hunt in Eagles Nest Wilderness in CO a few years back. One moring I would woke up and 10% of my food was strewn across the ground. The next night, something woke me up messing in my food... I yelled at whatever it was and went back to bed. When I woke up... another 10% gone. The next night I put my food in a good Filson bag... yep... next morning another 10% gone and a hole in the zipper seam of my Filson bag. I'm getting MAD at this point!!!! The next night the Food was in the ruined Filson bag but an additional 10 feet in the air in the tree. YEP... the LITTLE FU****G B*S***D had gotten in my bag again and took another 10% of my food. The next, and last night (for him), I put the bag w/ the food about 10 feet away from my head (no Grizzlies in CO!) w/ my .357 mag next to my head. When I heard something in the bag, I grabbed the .357 mag, flipped on my light, and shot at the LITTLE FU****G B*S***D as he fled away. Missed... but I didn't see the LITTLE FU****G B*S***D again! :)

Theodore Roosevelt once said, "The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation, INCREASED and NOT IMPAIRED in value."

Those pictures are gorgeous!
I haven't been up in the mountains for a long time, to long to remember when. I needed some kind of fix, thanks for sharing those with us!

I was in that pass in the second to last photo by the rocks about 5 years ago and watched 5 bucks feeding down below the trail about as far as you could see in the open. It was almost dark, so couldn't get any photos. I decided to enjoy the view. THree small bucks, one 23 inch 4 point, and one that was about 32 inches wide. He was an awesome buck. It was the end of July.
Its good to see that it didn't burn. I thought there was a fire in that neighborhood last year, but I guess not.
Thanks for posting the pics. You should have an awesome hunt.

Bone, your my heroe! lol Sent you a PM.

Also, look in pics 9 and 10 from the bottom. All that brown timber you see in burnt. That maybe the fire you heard about.

Michael,
Looks like some great muley country. I wish you and your dad the best of luck on your trip. Looking forward to seeing the harvest pics when you get back. I'm heading out on the 8th till the 17th for the highcountry. Saw snow up there yesterday. It's been very very wet here the last two weeks. Not really great glassing weather but great weather for still-hunting the timber pockets at timberline.

Nice pics, Bone. That is great looking country and I'm betting that there are some studs hiding in those pictures. Just find them and bust a couple; then send us some more pictures of the bucks.

Good hunting.

Absolutely gorgeous! I wish I could have been there with you. That looks like pretty good elk country is that what you will be hunting?

I'll be hunting for deer. I plan to spend LOTS of time glassing the timber pockets to try and catch a buck bedding. The only thing I'm worried about is making the shot count. I'll absolutely kill myself it I miss a good opportunity on a good shot.
