2 years ago, got a nice 4 point in AZ 18B.
The buck was in still in full velvet..
Any body out there heard of a buck in velvet this late in the
year? The game warden looked at the buck
and was surprised to see the velvet as well.

nothing surprises me. I do know that stags will keep their velvet all of the time, usually brought about by some damage to their testicles or something.

Oouch! I was thinking that it would be due to mineral deficiencies or perhaps the weather had not turned cool enough yet trigger whatever mechanism in the deer that starts the process of the antlers hardening.

A few years ago, while hunting in Montana, my partner and I spotted a good buck from about a mile away through our binos that looked to have double droppers. After getting the spotter out we could see that it was actualy velvet hanging off his main beams. Not a big deal except it was the first week of November and there was about a foot of snow on the ground. My partner ended up taking this buck, which ended up in the 175 range and had a harem of 12 does he was with. After closer inspection of the buck, we noticed while gutting him that he only had one testicle, and it was very tiny. He couldnt have done anything with those does if he wanted too. We figured that this was more than likely the reason for the late velvet................rf

I was down in southern Utah one year in the middle of December and seen a buck in velvet it was just a two point and didnt have any extra points or characteristics of a cactus buck, maybe mother nature just forgot to tell him to rub it off.

Here is a buck my brother shot in October last year in Idaho. Had both of his nutty's, just looked like he hadn't gotten around to rubbing off his velvet yet.
