8 hours away

Well, I'm 8 hours away from hitting the road for my Wyoming mule deer trip. Unfortunately I'm going solo. My brother who lives out their was going to be my partner on this one, but he's in the USAF and was deployed on Aug. 23. I drew a region H tag and really do not want it to go to waste. With any luck I'll have some pictures to show from the trip, or at least a story about the one that got away.

Good luck Dewayne! I'm headed up to G on Sunday. I'm not sure if you've hunted solo before. If not I can tell you that it's one of the most mentally challenging things that I've ever done. Last year I hunted 16 days total in WY. Of those the last 6 were by myself and it was tuff to say the least. Stick it out and hopefully you will get what you're looking for. Just remember, don't take any chances. Stay out of the steep rotten stuff and don't get yourself into anything you can't get out of alone. I can't wait to see your pictures and hear your story when you get back.

Good luck and hunt safe!

ITS ASHAME THOSE TAGS ARE NOT TRANSFERRIBLE, LIKE THEY ARE/ OR USE TO BE IN IDAHO. TAKE EVERY DAY ONE AT A TIME, STAY UPBEAT, TAKE A DAY OFF GO INTO TOWN.. GET REFRESHED. HIT IT HARD IN THE 2ND HALF, YOU MIGHT POP A MONSTER. GOOD LUCK, YD.

As a guy that always hunts solo, let me tell you, you have to be prepared for it. Your mind will be begging you to go home, especially if you have discouraging day. There won't be anyone there to feed off from for encouragement when you rattle into that cold camp at night. Tough it out, and you will reep the rewards. Good luck to you and your brother. Tell him thanks.

Well, although I had no success in Wyoming I still had a great time. It definitely was more difficult both physically and mentally going solo than what I had thought it would be. To make it short, after 3 days of either rain or snow or both depending on the elevation I talked myself into leaving. Day 1 soaked from rain, it was so nice when I left I didn't take rain gear with me. Day 2 after a 3 1/2 hour hike at 8980 ft. and nearly to the top the sky suddenly gets jet black and instantly a snow storm blows in. With visibility 100 yds and being very much shaken over how fast things changed. I was hurring getting gloves, face mask and parka on then I headed down. Day 3 After being on the mountain for 9 hours and in the rain/snow for most of that time and with nobody their for encouragement ( the weathers gotta get better) I simply talked myself into rolling that Ford back to Michigan. Maybe next time.........

I know how you feel. It's very different when your with a person who's extremely passionate and eternally optimistic about hunting, than it is when you're solo!

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

I hunted your same region and got a respectable buck (see other forumn). The weather was extremely tough the first night. There's nothing worse than wet snow. I know how hard it is to hunt that area, especially by yourself. With the snow of lately, you may be able to sneak in a great 2 day hunt if your job allows? Another good storm or two and you could probabbly hunt out of town. Don't give up if you do not have too!

Unfortunately it's to late for another try, being as I'm nearly 1600 miles and 20 some odd hours of driving time from where I was hunting. Now that I've had a good taste of what the weather will/could be at those elevations I hope next time things will be different. With a lot more mental preparation, should I have to make the trip solo again hopefully I will be able to stick it out longer. Like I told many from work. The trip wasn't about going to Wyoming to kill a deer, it was about going and having fun, and enjoying myself. Unfortunately that wasn't the case this time.
